How to upgrade to 4.2 from 4.1 After 6.15 baseband update
Hi all I have an iPhone 3GS new bootrom running redsn0w 4.1 with the iPad baseband 6.15. Does anyone know the correct method to go about upgrading to 4.2 then jailbreaking with greenpoision? I'm fine with the jailbreaking process, I'm just not sure about upgrading to 4.2 is there a baseband requirement and if so how am I going to get around it? Thanks in advance

Just update to 4.2.1 normally. After you get the 1015 error use greenpoison on it.

Okay I updated using iTunes to 4.2 and it gave me the 1015 error. I then used greenpoison went into DFU ect. Said the jailbreak was finished, I watched all the scripts and everything on the phone, then it went back to the connect to iTunes page. Any ideas?
Sorry, just remembered about recboot! Thats the final step. Thanks again!

Sorry, can you please explain how you used RecBoot to solve your problem?

I read here: Restore iPhone 3GS, 3G Baseband 06.15.00 To iOS 4.1/4.2.1
So how can I upgrade iOS 4.1 with 6.15 baseband to 4.2.1 on windows?2. In case you are on 4.2.1, then first restore back to iOS 4.1. This is because with 4.2.1, you cannot kick your device out of recovery when you iTunes throws up error 1015.
Do I have to wait for snowbreeze 2.2 to build a custom firmware?

If you don't have 4.1 blob, then you have to restore to custom firmware of 4.2.1. Google search for the firmware.

Thanks for your help, man.
Luckily enough, I do have a SHSH blobs saved for 4.1, 4.2, 4.3b2 and 4.3b3.
Is there a way for me to upgrade to 4.2.1 using the 4.1 SHSH?
Googling for "upgrade to 4.2.1 using 4.1 shsh" didn't really give me anything.

Yup, I have 4.2.1 as well, sorry. Yeah, I was put off by a few posts saying "Save your 4.1 SHSH blobs for an untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak", but what they really mean is "In case something goes wrong, save your 4.1 blobs so that you can restore to 4.1 if you need to"
DLing a custom firmware from here: [S] 3GS 4.2.1 with 6.15 BB Custom IPSW - Page 2 - GSM-Forum
Should do the trick. Thanks

Use redsn0w 0.9.6 , browse to stock 4.2.1 and check dfu mode only.
Run itunes : shift + restore to cfw of 4.2.1
Run redsn0w again to install cydia.
If you have the new bootrom , it will be tethered.
Try running GreenPoison to get untethered jailbreak.

Why are you saying he cant when I done it? My 4.1 3GS new baseband to update I done this:
1. iTunes update to 4.2 giving me error 1015
2. Used greenpoison
3. Once jailbreak was complete, connect to iTunes on screen.
4. Opened Redsn0w and hit Just boot tethered now cycles then back to connect to iTunes.
5. Opened reboot and hit exit recovery mode and watch it work.
Probably not the safest method, but it works. Cydia wigged out the first time I opened it but after a reboot it was fine.
So yeah, screw getting a mac or waiting for sn0wbreeze..do it the way I invented when I panicked!

Ah, phew. If anyone does this and loses their wifi, you'll need to find a way to unlock without using cydia. The instructions here worked for me: install ultrasn0w with out wifi... - GSM-Forum
And one more tip:
If iTunes suddenly doesn't detect your iphone after the jailbreak, the reason might be that you ran the redsn0w jailbreak twice (maybe you ran it again because you wanted a custom boot image, like me)...
Anyway, the fix is to start the whole process again (restore to the custom 4.2.1 fw), and only jailbreak with redsn0w once per fw restore. YMMVLast edited by nathan_f77; 02-08-2011 at 10:04 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost
