can't save SHSH with new TinyUmbrella
My wife and I both have iPhone 4's running iOS 4.1. Mine is jailbroken, hers is not. Now that the untethered GreenPois0n is out for 4.2.1, I'd like to upgrade and jailbreak both of our phones.
I thought I should use TinyUmbrella on her phone to save SHSH blobs. I believe I've done this before with a previous version of TinyU, but I'm not positive.
When I first downloaded TinyU, I got a Java error. I found a thread describing a fix for that, so I downloaded a new version of iTunesMobileDevice.dll and replaces my old one with it. Now TinyU runs, but it doesn't seem to detect any devices - my jailbroken iPhone4, her non-jailbroken iPhone4, or my JB iPod Touch 3G.
I open TinyU, it spews some log messages ending with "Cached [0] shsh files", I connect a device, and nothing happens. The "Save my SHSH" button remains gray and inactive. No more log messages appear. The devices are clearly connecting correctly to the computer, but TinyU doesn't appear to see them.
I believe TinyU has always worked correctly for me in the past - what gives?
thanks for any advice...
OK, a little update. I think the version of TinyU I was running was old, and the fix I applied, replacing the .dll file, was un-helpful (iTunes didn't run correctly) so I reversed it.
This made me hopeful that my TinyU problem would be solved, but no such luck ... I downloaded TinyU v4.21.07 and ran it (no Java problem this time), but it still doesn't seem to recognize any device.
When I run TinyU, either before or after connecting my iPhone/iTouch, the "Sace SHSH" button stays gray and never becomes clickable.
I know I've made this work before ... what am I doing wrong?
OK this post is going to turn into a running log of my ignorance. I didn't realize that you apparently need to run a version of TinyU that corresponds to your phone's iOs version (correct?). I was able to find versions that I had previously downloaded - 4.1.6 and 4.01.03. When I run either of these the "Save My SHSH" button is now active, and clearly TinyU is detecting whatever device I connect.
I do get an error message saying "Something is wrong: You don't have admin privileges or you have something running on port 80 or your hosts file is not modifiable..." but in spite of that things seem to run fine with either of my jailbroken devices...
But when I run TinyU with my wife's non-JB iPhone4, it says that I am too late to save SHSH for 4.0.1 or for 4.1. That's OK, right? I can just upgrade her to 4.2.1, save *those* SHSH blobs, and then jailbreak her phone?
Please help me out if I'm missing anything essential, and sorry for the now ridiculous length of this thread/post...Last edited by hugeiphone; 02-07-2011 at 02:44 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

If you are too late to save SHSH on a device all that means is if you update to a newer version on the iPhone you won't be able to downgrade later. You can always update but with SHSH you cant downgrade.

the only shsh you can save NOW is 4.2.1 which you may as well do.
you can JB the device as is though. use Limera1n.
stay away from 4.2.1 if you need an unlock, as there is none at the moment, and there is no REAL reason to update.60% of the time, it works every time.
