iPhone 3G updating to iOS 4.2.1 (Error 1015)
I have an issue when updating my friend's iPhone 3G to iOS 4.2.1
Beforehand, yes I did use redsn0w when it was on stock 4.2.1 firmware and used the flash iPad baseband option along with the jailbreak, however after it was finished, I clicked on Cydia on the phone and it got stuck, then I hard resetted the phone, and it got stuck on the Apple logo.
So I tried restoring it with my own iSO 4.2.1 custom firmware (with iPad baseband) I made with PwnageTool.
It keeps giving me Error 1015?
I know you can get out by kicking it out of recovery mode, but in iOS 4.2.1 it doesn't work that way, I had to downgrade to 3.1.3 and it worked but I still need to upgade to iOS 4.2.1
Anyway to do it without getting the dreader Error 1015?
Remember I have a custom firmware for the iPhone 3G with the iPad baseband in it
Error 1015 usually links to baseband wasn't successfully installed

No, if you dont put the iPad baseband update in it there will be no baseband update. Meaning it will leave it as is which is why you won't get the 1015 error.

Is your DFU a normal DFU mode, try again from this recovery mode that you are now having.

i used snowbreeze 2.02 to patch 3.1.3 then to DFU with same program to where it will say on screen something like "waiting for custom firmware". thats where i open itunes and it says my phone is in recovery mode...ive tried patched 3.1.3, regular 3.1.3, someone else said delete it from the user-->appcache-->itunes-->and delete the 4.2.1 thats in there and still no avial.. i got error code 1601 today and error code 6, and ive tried it on a desktop instead of laptop ive been using and same problem. ended up restoring back to 4.2.1 til someone can help figure out whats wrong.
yea, ive tried the regular way to dfu (Power + home, home, etc) to where screen is off, but didnt work either

I have a set of problems similar to some of yours. My 3G with redsn0w JB 4.2.1 with iPad BB froze on Apple, so I did a hard reset and restoring with iTunes got a 1611. I've tried a bunch of things, all unable to bypass the errors, which keep changing code (I'm kind of a novice) and now I'm getting 1015 consistently. I haven't tried going to a 3.x CFW yet, and would really like to stay in 4.x. Both 4.1 (something I downloaded - CFW?) and 4.2.1 (the custom one I jailbroke with) get 1015, whether or not I've used iREB to greenscreen the phone, or kicked it out of recovery with TinyUmbrella, or put it in DFU mode (I think I've done this successfully). Still 1015 in all cases with either 4.x firmware. Should I try a 3.x? With or without iPad BB (or is that only available with 4.x?) Like I said, I'm a novice, so I'd love if someone would be a hero and walk me through this. Thanks in advance!

Take it down to stock 3.1.2. Use Redsn0w 0.9.4 to set into pwned dfu mode. Then restore to custom fw 4.2.1 or 4.1 without the iPad baseband packaged in it

OK, how do you recommend I downgrade to 3.1.2? Just Shift-click in iTunes? Or do I need to be in DFU mode to do that? Also, are you sure redsn0w 0.9.4 is right for iOS 3.1.2? I'm looking on RedmondPie and it looks like 0.9.4 is meant for 3.1.3. Thanks for your help, iAnnie.
Hey, x98car, you seem to be a more sophisticated sort than I, and you're online! Any clue about my question to iAnnie down at the bottom of this thread? Thanks!Last edited by fourth; 02-17-2011 at 08:10 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

You just want to restore to 4.2.1?

So I tried just shift-Restore, got "firmware not compatible," greenscreened the phone with iREB, same thing. Huh? Remember that my phone has been stuck in recovery mode for weeks, going through various processes like this, all unsuccessful. This is the first time I've tried downgrading to 3.x. Help?

Sounds like you're not using the right firmware for your device.
To answer the redsn0w question, it isn't just for 3.1.3, it is also for 3.1.2. The set of instructions can be followed exactly for either 3.1.3 or 3.1.2.

Yes, I'd like to restore to 4.2.1, but here's my story: I had a jailbroken 3G with 4.2.1 (redsn0w 0.9.6b6) with iPad baseband. One day during normal operation the phone stuck on Apple screen, had to hard reset. Then it got error 1611 trying to do a normal restore. Then I used iREB to greenscreen it, tried custom restoring to the 4.2.1 I jailbroke with (which I assume now has the iPad baseband bundled into it? Or not?) This got me 1015. I've tried numerous things, kicking out of recovery with TinyUmbrella, running redsn0w with 4.1 and 4.2.1 standard FWs, and always I get 1015 and back to recovery mode. When I tried downgrading to 3.1.2 at iAnnie's suggestion above, with or without greenscreening it with iREB first, I got "firmware not compatible" (no error #). Any thoughts?
ooooo, shoot, you're right, iAnnie, I just checked and I did in fact have 3.1.2 for the 1st gen iPhone instead of my 3G. I'll try again now, thanks! I'm such a n00b you'll probably hear back with something else in like 2 mins.

Ok, so why are you going back down to 3.1.2 then?
All you need to do is make a custom 4.2.1 firmware with either pwnage tool 4.2 or snowbreeze 2.2. Then use redsnow 0.9.6rc8 to enter pwned dfu then restore to the custom 4.2.1 in iTunes.

OK, I've been getting 1015s when I try to restore in DFU mode to the 4.2.1 I jailbroke with. Is that custom, or not? I never made a custom firmware, I just downloaded one that the jailbreaking instructions told me to download. How can I tell if it's custom or not? Sorry I'm such a n00b.

If the ipsw doesn't say "custom" in it it is a stock firmware.
If it does say "custom" and you are still getting 1015, it has the iPad baseband packaged in it. You'll want one that doesn't have the iPad baseband packaged.
