iPhone 3G won't restore properly
I'm trying to restore this iPhone someone gave me but it's not restoring. When I first got it, the screen (LCD, Digitizer, etc.) were shattered so I bought new parts. Fixed it up and put it back together. Since I got the parts separately, I repaired them as I went along. Before my repairs, it worked perfectly fine. Got it restored and all, just the LCD was broken. So I attempted to jailbreak it because I thought I was getting the "White Screen of Death" whatever that means. But then it froze up on me and bam. Now every time I tried to restore it, it failed. So I got a new LCD and a new battery (just in case). So apparently, the LCD was broken because now I can see when it's being restored (Apple logo pops up and the bar starts to move). It is currently in DFU mode (or the black screen with no backlight). When I connect it to iTunes, it pops up saying it's in recovery mode blah blah. So I click restore, use the iOS 4.2.1 from Apple and attempt to restore. When it gets to the final stage of Verifying... (after the two bars go away of extracting and verifying) it stops and says the big "error 6." So I try jailbreaking it, but both times (tethered and untethered) just pop up after finishing with a white screen then shut off. (Using redsn0w for windows). So my next step was to drain the battery, as I recall reading that using an iPod charger could screw it up which I do have a wall charger for iPod's that I use for my iPod Touch. Left the battery out for 2hrs and the put it back together.
Now it's still giving me the same error and same white screen. Any ideas? Sorry if you see anything noobish, I'm not retarded when it comes to technology, but when it comes to Apple stuff I'm clueless.
EDIT: Forgot to add it won't turn on to the "Connect to iTunes" Screen, but when I plug it in my computer recognizes it. Oh and I've already tried to restore with a different computer, but that didn't work.

Try using tiny umbrella to exit recovery
The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
Hopefully you're not screwed completely.
Thats right I forgot to mention you'll need current iTunes with 4.2.1Last edited by iPittsburgh; 02-10-2011 at 09:19 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

That white screen sounds problematic. If your comp recognizes it but it isn't showing a screen, it's likely stuck in DFU mode. Have you tried restoring to stock 3.1.3 to see if that gives you the same problem? If not, try a clean restore to stock 3.1.3 and we can go from there.

Sometimes, it could be due to the cheap quality LCD screen you replaced. I am not saying you are cheap but the quality is usually made in China.

I'll try the 3.1.3 and TinyUmbrella thing. I didn't think I could use TinyUmbrella because I thought I already had to have it hacked. I'll post results soon. And yes iTunes is up to date.

Okay so I tried restoring to 3.1.3 and the same issue came up at the end. I tried to use the TinyUmbrella, but my iPhone only showed up when ever iTunes turned the screen on and began recovering. From there I tried to exit Recovery from TinyUmbrella but all that did was just shut it down. It can't be the screen because this started before I got the new screen. Error 6 still poped up at the end. Also deleted the restore data C
Users\Squall-Pwns\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\Device Support.
Don't know if this will help but my iPhone model is A1241
EDIT: Would Vista/7 have anything to do with it? I do have a computer with XP I could try.

I've tried all three of my computers with three different iOS's 3.1.3, 4.0.1, and 4.2.1, and all end with Error 6. Here's what iTunes is saying if that helps.
entering clear_persistent_boot_args
executing /usr/sbin/nvram boot-args=
nvram: Error setting variable - 'boot-args': (iokit/common) general error
error setting 'boot-args' to '': 1
attempting to dump restore log
writing log file: /mnt1/restore.log
I even got a new cord and that still did nothing >.>...

Your iPhone has more than a shattered glass hardware problem, the motherboard could be cracked due to impact

Well see if that was the case, then why did it work before I replaced the screen? Before I got a new screen, it would just show up white. It worked perfectly. I got it to turn on and was able to figure out how to use the slide to unlock and I could hear the sounds and everything, just didn't know what was going on. So before I got the new screen, I attempted to jailbreak it but something must of went wrong and caused the whole thing to crap out and give me the error 6 now. I do remember that I believe I was using redsn0w at the time and I attempted to go into DFU mode when it told me (Yes I was on 4.2.1) but it crapped out afterward. Could that be the reason I'm stuck here? Only one I can think of.
And yes, I used iTunes to do a full restore (Download and Restore) and nothing changed. I may have to do a little snooping around aren't I >.> at any rate, how is iTunes turning it on? or is DFU mode literally just that black screen? I hear two different stories about it: One being that just the backlight is lit and the other as I described before.
To clarify things, I did not touch the baseband. I had no intentions of unlocking it yet and I read that doing that on 4.2.1 was very bad.Last edited by M3rror; 02-18-2011 at 11:54 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost
