3G stuck after jailbreaking and removing all data and settings HELP!!!

Ok so was given a second hand iphone 3G and needed to jailbreak and unlock it. I successfully jailbroke it using Redsn0w, having updated it to iOS 4.2.1

for some reason before unlocking it i decided to remove all the old settings and data (as they weren't mine), when i turned it on i was faced with screen with 0 apps, not even settings etc. i tried restoring it in itunes (no joy, unknown error 1015), and rejailbreaking it with redsn0w (it got stuck halfway through). now when i start it up all i get is the screen telling me to plug it into itunes which then doesnt do anything.

is this permanently damaged? please help?
