first thing first, thanks for a great site. i have spent the past 3 days glued to it trying to figure this one out without bothering anyone but it seems its beyond me so i am calling out for help.
i think with this fault a picture can speak a thousand words so i have made a VERY BASIC web page with a load of piccys on so people can have a look and see what they think. below is copied and pasted from the bottom of the site so dont read it twice
This all started when i replaced the back of the phone as it was worn, after removing all the components from the old case the camera lens fell away from the cmos sensor, i thought it was no big deal just leave the cam out and order a new one and fit it when it arrives, i put the phone back together and it was all fine used it for 2 days then the new cam arrived. I stripped the phone down again fitted the cam and this is where we are now. I have tried it without the cam in case this is causing the problem but it is the same.
I did a lot of reading on forums to see if anyone else has had the same issues but no one seems to have??? There are loads of reports of dropping and then white screen, but the phone still rings so that is obviously the LCD ribbon that has come loose, there are also reports of total white screen and the phone will not even restore, but mine is in between the 2 reported problems.
I read in a forum and on apples site that it could be a bad USB lead / USB config but i have tried 4 different leads on 4 different computers 2 of them having never had itunes installed until yesterday. I also read that it could be the dock connector, so i have replaced this today in the hope that it would sort it but still nothing, saying that i don’t recall having error 2005 since i have replaced this
By trade i am a computer engineer, so i am not your average chump that knows nothing, however with that said i am not an iphone engineer, so i could be missing something really simple.
As far as i know i have used redsnow to flash the latest IPAD baseband to the phone, it has told me on the screen that it is doing this, if it has or not remains to be seen.
If anyone has any info or ideas that could help me i would be very grateful
You shouldnt be using redsnow after you get an error from itunes. That is most likely what is leaving you with the white screen. Let the battery drain completely, or take it out from the device for at least an hour then try the restore again. If it gets an error you can try tiny umbrella to exit recovery, do not use redsnow until the phone has booted up normally at least once.
i think you may be onto somthing with the battery removal. when i dont do anything with the phone and just leave it to let the battery drain compleatly, and then i plug it in it all responds normal you get the battery charging screen, then when it has enougth power to turn on it gets stuck in DFU / just black screen.
to be honest i was only using redsnow as a test to see if the phone would respond to it in anyway for example to test the screen and such.
i dont think it is a USB issue as i have tried on my XP machine in the workshop and also a MAC in the workshop and my home comp and my laptop.
i do feel i am getting somewhere, i am just downloading a custom IPSW of 4.1 now and i am going to flash that once i have removed the battery for a while. i think thats where i am going wrong as the phone was unlocked using redsn0w and the IPAD baseband, and i have been trying to restore a non custom firmware. hopefully i will get to the bottom of it.
thanks again for your reply and if you think flashing with the 4.1 custom is not the thing to do please let me know.
ok here is the story so far. i feel progres is being made
i left the battery disconected for about 80mins
put the phone back together, tried to restore the custom 4.1 firmware. i tunes would stick when preparing iphone for recovery and just hang and do nothing.
so i ran iREB 4.0 and put the phone into the DFU with the green screen ( i read that is you have issues restoring custom firmware this fixes it)
with the iphone on the green screen, i opened up itunes again selected the custom firmware and the phone goes through the full restore process, (before it would crash at the verifing stage and then back to square one) now it goes all the way to the end of the progress bar, rite at the end when the phone reboots itunes comes up with error 6. i have tried 2 cables and 2 computers and all the ports on both computers. i have removed all startup items from my PC (not any apple / itunes) i have removed my antivirus just incase.
i feel i am soooo close and it is somthing simple that i am missing, my gut feeling is that its a baseband issue, its as if the phone will just not boot.
i am even begining to question myself now, i have tried so many firmware versions i am loosing track lol, i know 100% that i have the blobs for 3.1.3 and 4.0 and i am 99% sure i have them for 4.1 but there is a tiny doubt in my mind. if i didnt have the blobs for 4.1 would this explain my problem? i am currently looking for a 3.1.3 custom firmware to try it, as i dont have access to a MAC until tomorrow when i get to work so i cannot make one until then.
hummmmmmmmm im stumped. i am gunna give this 3.1.3 a go and then if i have no joy ill have a go on the MAC in the morning.
just out of interest are there any tools for checking what baseband the phone is running while it is in DFU? and is there a way of changing the baseband using windows?
sorry, error 6, and the restore progres bar on the phone is 50%, just before the error 6 comes up, the phone displays the rotating "thinking" wheel at the bottom (if you know what i meen?) of the screen then goes back into DFU.
