I would suggest 4.1 as it will be untethered, plus there are multiple jailbreaks to pick from.

    x98car,
I've been having this same problem, i used the pdf exploit to jailbreak, forever ago obviously, but now my cydia takes about 5 minutes to load changes and my friend who has 4.1's takes like 2 seconds.
When i try updating to 4.1 it says it can't update to 4.1.

    Just throwing that out there.

Thanks for the replies. This is why I want to upgrade, I'm getting a few bugs and its sooooo slow!!! So do I update first? I have never done it from shsh before, is it easy? I've done a few different jailbreaks before, pwn, redsnow, spirit, any opinions on which is the best of the current bunch? I have access to both windows 7 and osx 10.6.6

Its pretty easy. Just use tiny umbrella. Make sure your SHSH are saved, start the tss server, then shift/option (depending on windows or mac) restore to 4.1 (download that manually).

Then you can use limera1n/greenpoison/redsnow 0.9.6rc8 to jailbreak. I prefer redsnow because it installs the newer, faster version of cydia.

Is there no way to do it without restoring?

You may be able to shift/option update but it will still wipe all your jailbreak stuff. Forgot to mention, you will get a 1004 error near the end of the restore, it is normal. Just use tiny umbrella to exit recovery when you do.

You may need to do a dfu restore to 4.1 then. Just do a backup in itunes first then you can just restore everything after.

Like I said I prefer redsnow, the other two are more straightforward to use though.

Thanks for all your help, got redsn0w on now, very painless. Finding it a bit difficult to dl stuff from cydia compared to before but I've probably not downloaded everything I need to. All i ticked in the jb was cydia.

Now my daughter wants me to jb her 3gs which is on 4.0. Can I update this to 4.1 and then do redsn0w?

If hers has 4.1 shsh then ya you can. Use a custom firmware if it is unlocked and you want it to stay that way.
