Hoo boy... 4.2.1 Custom Restore?
Okay. I know. It's bad to try restoring a custom firmware. Especially one like this.
SO. long story kinda short is my girlfriend lost her original iphone to a toilet, bought her dads 3GS by contributing to his new iphone 4 upgrade. His iPhone was locked to a carrier. She ignored my constant advice to not update a firmware if she wants a jailbreak. She updated to 4.2.1. Fine. There is a jailbreak but (at the time) it was tethered. AND ultrasn0w required some tricky tricks involving the use of the iPad baseband and replacing the iPhone baseband with the iPad one. She was willing to take the risk (but I don't think she understood half of what I attempted to explain...) and I jailbroke away.
So all worked out well. She accidentally turned it off and I had to boot it via my computer, but it functioned well.
Now the problem. She is a PA and uses her phone a lot, and because her iPhone had a massive downtime, she had a bevy of messages she tried to reply in one go. Which also meant she did not watch her batteries. Bam, the iPhone died. No problem. I've always reminded her to take the phone to me and me only to boot up again. DO NOTHING ELSE. however, her charming boss decided he knew a thing or two and said he would plug it in to his computer and charge it. He then went on to annoyingly press the restore button. THE RESTORE BUTTON.
She didn't mention that as I tried in vain to boot the iPhone via RedSn0w. I tried little umbrella, but I never got the chance to save her SHSH numbers. The problem is, the iPhone will not update because of the baseband number. It will do the first few steps and then stall. I don't even think waiting for 4.3 to come out will help because of the modified baseband number. It's very high.
I have never cooked custom firmwares involving a custom baseband number before and have little knowledge as to how to go about it. I'm hoping I can find some solutions soon.
Much thanks, and kudos to the guys who read through aaaaaalll that and still replied. Much respect.

"Charming Boss" lol
Here's the easy way out:
Get pwnagetool to create a custom firmware for 4.2.1.
Be sure that the 'baseband update' os unchecked (it should be by default).
Also, You want to say No when it asks if you have an official SIM that would let the phone activate normally through iTunes.
Next use pwnagetool to put the phone in "Pwned DFU mode"
Now option + restore to the custom firmware. You should have a jailbroken phone when it's complete, if it gives you an error after the restore, then you need to boot tethered.
if cydia is not on your homescreen, then use Redsn0w to install it, boot tethered, then ultrasn0w, boot tethered, finally SAM and your SET.
Hope this helps!

Heya! I only just realized, but the latest pwnage tool only supports 4.1 am I correct? I didn't think it worked with 4.2.1.
Unless there is a way to make it recognize it...

there is a way, you will need a mac, and a bundle for pwnagetool to recognise the Ipsw, sorry I had forgotten about that.
pm me if you cant find the files / dont have access to a mac and I'll see what I can share

How to: iPhone 4 to 4.2.1, keeping BB 1.59.00\2.10.04, using redsn0w to tether boot
actually that is the perfect explanation!

oh but that's for iphone 4... I'm posting from my phone... what type of phone is yours?
the instructions for a 3GS will be the same except you will need a 3GS 4.2.1 bundle

You have been a massive help theomer. I'll use the instructions you linked me to. I remember doing that a while ago for the iOS 3.2 or something like ages ago for my iPad.
I'm doing this for an iPhone 3GS. The Pwnage bundle supplied from the other tutorial won't work with the 3GS ISPW. I'll see if I can hound out one for 3GS via ol' google. If I fail, I'll try and PM you and see if you have the file...
Muchos thanks bud.

Just to update. Everything worked out fine. No hitches whatsoever. There was a moment though when the update seemed to hang... but then, for whatever reason, it finished off all good. Much thanks!
