Exclamation 3gs stuck in plug into itunes loop

Hey all, Im a total noob to these forums so please excuse any noob **** I may or may not come out with!
I attempted to upgrade my 3gs from 3.1.3 to 4.2.1 using redsnow 09.5b,
I followed all instructions to the letter! i think!! redsnow seemed to do its thing but then hung on the reboot screen, I tried to reboot and go into dfu but now it seems stuck in the plug me into itunes screen!! i dont think I have a shsh saved either? if that makes a difference?
    any help appreciated

redsnow doesnt update firmware. Only itunes can update firmware. If you dont have SHSH then you will only be able to restore to 4.2.1. You should find out what bootrom you have with idetector. Also do you require unlock or are you on official carrier?

Find your ecid with this: iClarified - iPhone - How to Find Your iPhone ECID [Windows] (Comments)

Then manually put that into tiny umbrella and press save SHSH to see what you get.

Since you need unlock I would suggest either restore to a regular 4.0 and use jailbreakme.com or restore to a custom 4.1 made with snowbreeze or pwnage tool. You will need to run tiny umbrellas TSS server when doing this so that the restore doesn't fail. stay away from 4.2.1 as that will be a tethered jailbreak and also do not restore to a regular 4.1 firmware as that will make it a lot harder for you to unlock.
