It's a miracle I got the thing going back before xmas & now someone has reset it & stuffed it again.
I brought it as a LOCKED with AT&T last year, had baseband 5.14.06 or something like that, was carrier locked. I used it as an ipod for a while then when the redsnow thing came out I did the upgrade the baseband to the ipad one & got it going.
Now I'm back to being stuck again & have pretty much forgotten how to sort it.
I have downloaded:
iPad1,1_3.2.2_7B500_Restore
and:
iPhone2,1_4.2.1_8C148a_Restore
and redsn0w 0.9.6b5
Had a crack at it but can't get it to work.
Can someone tell me in tell me in layman's terms the steps I need to do to get this unlocked & working again?
You need to create a custom firmware of 4.2.1 from pwnage tools 4.1.3 without iPad bb.
run redsnow, browse to stock 4.2.1 .
check the dfu box.
Once dfu is done,
run iTunes and restore to cfw of 4.2.1
run redsnow again and install cydia.
It's called a "tethered" jailbreak. That means that if your phone, for any reason, needs a reboot you must do the reboot through redsn0w. It's not ideal and as you will see, a bit tedious but until the "untethered" one comes along it's the only way.
1. Download redsn0w 0.9.6rc8! to Windows. If you have a Mac I assume it will similar but I don't know. The 0 is a zero not a capital O.
2. Download and save, from a third party, iPhone software 4.2 and put it in a folder on your computer. When it downloads it will be a .zip file. Rename the .zip part of the name to .ipsw. Ignore the warning and rename it. It will now have a pretty, lego-style, cube icon.
3. Plug the iPhone into the computer. Hold down the power button and "slide to power off".
4. Once the iPhone is off run redsn0w. Browse it to the .ipsw you downloaded and it will find run some exploits and stuff.
5. The next stage is self explanatory. Make sure you do what it says. It can be a bit tricky holding down the power button and then the home button whilst clicking on "next" but practice makes perfect. Select load Cydia.
6. If all goes well a "loading ram disc" icon will appear on the iPhone and then it will reboot.
7. You should now have a Cydia icon on the iphone but it will be white and won't work.
8. Now you need to repeat the process for redsn0w remembering to switch the iPhone off as per No 3.
9. When you get to the install Cydia etc screen choose "just boot tethered right now". It will go through a similar process and then the phone will reboot. It will have a pineapple logo on the screen as it does so.
10. You now have a jailbroken iphone.
11. Run Cydia. It will do it's thing and then return the iPhone to it's usual state. Re run Cydia again. At the prompt choose "User".
12. Choose "essential upgrade" after which it will want to reboot. Hold down the power button and slide to power off. Sadly it's back to redsn0w for the "just boot tethered right now" option.
In a word no! I'm assuming here that you are now on ipsw 4.2? If you are 4.1 or lower then userland jailbreak will work untethered. If you are indeed on 4.2 then sadly you must use redsn0w everytime you reboot. It's a tethered jailbreak and does only that. However this shouldn't be too much of a problem as a reboot is not needed often. Respringing is ok. For now you'll have to wait until a devteam genius comes up with the untethered version.

Reason: Additional text.
Untethered is only possible at the moment on 4.1 or lower. Maybe you unknowingly downgraded the .ipsw to 4.1 through Cydia's on file blobs. I'm guessng here!
