need help pls: unlock/jailbreak 3gs and upgrade FW
Hi, total noob here,
I just bought a used locked iphone 3GS (ios version 3.1.3 7E18 , modem FW 5.12.01) to upgrade my old 2g dinosaur. need to unlock it for tmobile and upgrade IOS so I can run some ios 4 apps (ie want to customize ringtone).
I remember there was some flow chart I saw here once, but can't find it now. What's the best method for me to jailbreak/unlock and then upgrade or vice versa? what system shall i upgrade to? what shall i watch out for?
Any help or pointers greatly appreciated!

ok, I downloaded TinyUmbrella 4.21.02 and clicked save shsh, and while I don't really understand it, below is what I got in the log: (ie it saved some 4.2.1 shsh file? looks like it identifies my iphone as 4.2.1 ?) pls provide foolproof instructions (remember total noob here :-) - i am already unsure if i was upgrading to 4.2.1 or something else I shouldn't do, I don't really know what tiny umbrella does etc.

The good news is you have the old bootrom and you will have an untethered jailbreak at 4.2.1. The only bad news is that once you are at 4.2.1 , you can never turn back. But you will be alright at 4.2.1. Give me a sec. i will write it up for you.
Update your itunes to the latest.
Download Redsn0w 0.9.6RC8 and download stock 4.2.1 firmware.
Run redsn0w , browse to stock 4.2.1
Check only the box, dfu mode only.
Once DFU is done, the screen is black.
Run itunes : shift + restore to custom firmware of 4.2.1 ( in your PM box)
Once restored, you will be at emergency screen.
If you have a valid sim to trigger it , go ahead and do that otherwise proceed to the next step.
Run redsn0w again, browse to stock 4.2.1 but this time only check install cydia.
Now you are jailbroken at 4.2.1
Update cydia and install Ultrsn0w to unlock.

yeah, it sounds like 4.2.1 is bad cos i read a bunch of posts where people have issues with this or that not working after unlocking 4.2.1? shouldnt i upgrade to 4.0 or something where I can restore my phone easily? if its a big headache i rather keep the old system 3.1.3 or maybe 4.0. i dont need anything fancy, just wanna run some ios 4 apps and run my phone smoothly on Tmobile (ie one problem i encountered with 2g is the map isn't accurate, often six blocks off etc), hope the new one will work on tmobile.
You cannot restore to any firmware other than 4.2.1., that is the reason why i want you to run TU first for me to comfirm your availability of restoring anything lower.
Your baseband will be preserved by restoring to custom firmware, trust me you will definitely get signal, all you have to do is to turn off 3g.
thanks, so question: does this procedure above change my baseband? if so, any other alternatives? see above post with concerns about 4.2.1

the 3gs doesnt work on 3g speed on tmobile? why and how do i turn off 3g?

ok, I've tried to restore data from backup first, which worked, then done all steps above til install cydia, but now it erased all personal data so i had to restore again. Got the data back. Cydia still there. However, I have trouble with getting ultrasnow (assuming that's under cydia?). I am still at the old bb under 4.2.1 now. jailbroken but not unlocked I presume.
A) cydia needs internet, but I can't get wireless connection. ?
B) it's waiting to activate, how do I activate service, shall I go to tmobile first and have them put the SIM in? I assume it won't be any good without being unlocked.

You need wifi to update cydia first and then intstall Ultrasn0w.
Then go to T-mobile , get your service connected, put it in , turn off 3g, your iphone should be activated now.
thanks, I finally got through it all after I had some issues with wifi, found ultrasnow and just popped the sim in and it worked. However, there are warnings on most of cydia that 4.2.1 is not supported by most jailbroken apps and not worth the trouble for the upgrade. So far it runs ok, though. What do I do if I have to restore again? can i ever go back to 4.1 or something? do I have to be careful with upgrading so that apple doesnt upgrade my bb which i definitely don't want?
btw are you flying all over the world or just using a VPN? :-)
Hahaha, I flew to Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia for vacation and Chinese New Year. Will be hear for 2 months.
Always restore to custom firmware to preserve your baseband. Unless you want to upgrade your baseband , you do not restore to stock firmware.
