Default iPhone 4 stuck in recovery after upgrade

So I have an iPhone 4. It has been unlocked on 4.0.1 (baseband 01.59.00) for quite some time. I bought one of those Looxcie cameras, which requires 4.2.1. I downloaded the iPhone3 4.2.1 ipsw, did the ALT-Restore, and restored to 4.2.1. As expected, I got the 1015 error. I have run both TinyUmbrella and RecBoot to try to knock it out of recovery mode, but it won't happen. What now?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I'm dead in the water here.

    Thanks, Adam.

Do you have SHSH for 4.1 or lower?

I tried backing up the 4.0.1 using TinyUmbrella, but it gave me an error and wouldn't allow it.

It says it has 4.2.1, 4.1, and 4.2b3 saved, but I think those are actually iPhone 3G firmwares I had sitting on my hard drive.

I also noticed under the info it says 'Installed Firmware Version: 4.0'. Does that mean it didn't even upgrade the firmware?

Tiny umbrella shows the last firmware it saw on your device when it was last booted up. That's why it still says 4.0. Since you have 4.1 SHSH restore to that. You will get a 1004 error but can exit recovery with tiny umbrella on 4.1. 4.1 is better anyway as there are more choices to jailbreak and all are untethered.

I need 4.2 for this Looxcie thing. Can the 4.1 be unlocked, at least? I hopefully haven't lost my 01.59.00 baseband.

    Thanks for your quick replies!!

Oh, and any idea why it's stuck in Recovery?

Your first step is 4.1. Yes it can be unlocked as long as you have preserved your baseband. You getting the errors is actually a good thing in that regard. After you are up and running on 4.1 you can update (not restore, has to be update) to 4.2.1. Make sure tiny umbrella TSS server is running so that your baseband is preserved. You will still get the error but should be able to kick out of recovery as long as you press update. I would strongly suggest stayin on 4.1 until a untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak is released.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, the only version of 4.1 on my hard drive is for a 3G iPhone. I can download the 4.1 restore firmware, but will that even help me? I don't understand how TinyUmbrella would even list the firmware if it is incompatible with my phone :-/

Oddly enough, it looks like they are for the iPhone 4...I've attached a screenshot. Does that mean the ipsw's are already on my hard drive? I'm deployed to Iraq, so the download speed is PAINFULLY slow. Each ipsw takes about 12 hours to download, so if I don't need to, that would be great :-)

No, that's just your shsh. Those allow you to restore to this firmwares. You still need to download the 4.1 firmware itself.

Fair enough, downloading 4.1...I'm also going to re-download 4.2.1, hoping there was an error with the download from last time. Thanks again for all the help. I'll report back in 12-14 hours when they're done downloading!

Well, I was able to upgrade to 4.1 just fine. I then tried the 4.2.1 I re-downloaded, and it worked. Yay.

Problem is, my baseband is no longer 01.59.00, it's 03.10.01. I restored with Tiny Umbrella's TSS server running. So, now I guess I'm stuck. And am I mistaken in saying there's no way to unlock 03.10.01? Isn't there a way to upgrade the baseband to the iPad's, or is that only for the 3G and 3GS?

Hopefully I'll be able to get it unlocked. I go home for two weeks R&R in March, and my T-Mobile SIM would sure appreciate it :-)

Sorry to hear that. So did you not get the error when running the tss server?

There is no way to unlock that baseband (yet). The iPad baseband thing is just for 3G/3GS.

I think re-downloading the 4.2.1 firmware netted the actual fix.

Hopefully with iOS 4.3 coming out soon, they'll release an unlock for my baseband.

Hope this may help. I had similar trouble not being able to restore my brand new i4 after a jailbreak went a bit wrong! iTunes refused to restore it. Not iTunes fault. I had mistakenly thought tinyumbrella had saved my ssh to cydia but it hadn't. I had a script line running in the windows host file directing the iPhone to restore not from Apple but from Cydia (more on that at Cydia). Once this line was removed it restored no problem. Now jailbroken again. Tethered but it's better than nothing. StevieP.
