New to Jailbreaking

Hey all,

Got my Iphone 4 with 4.2.1 about a week ago with unlimited data from an old plan.. Anyways I want to jailbreak my phone so i can take advantage of all the goodies. I am familiar with what untethered and tethered jailbreak are. I want to get an untethered so it wont be such a pain to keep jail breaking if my phone dies.. Can anyone help me? I know that an untethered jailbreak is still unavailable for 4.2.1.. Thanks

There is no untethered Jailbreak available for you yet, As your phone came with 4.2.1, and to have any chance of untethered you would need shsh for 4.2b3 saved which you will not have.

So you can wait until the untethered jailbreak comes out (who knows when ?) or you can Jailbreak now with Redsn0w and have a tethered Jailbreak, To be honest once you have everything set up how often would you re boot your phone ??

Ya, tethered jailbreak isnt that bad at all once you get everything set up.

As i am new can anyone walk me through.. I am very new to all this and though im not technically retarded i think im gonna need some help.. Also i heard that iOS 4.3 came out.. Would it be unwise to upgrade if i want to jailbreak? Thx

Just download redsnow 0.9.6rc8 and a 4.2.1 firmware for your device.
Open redsnow browse for the firmware and choose the option to install cydia, follow the directions after that for entering dfu and let redsnow do its thing.
Once done you will see cydia with a white icon.
Use redsnow again this time just pick the option to boot tethered.
Once booted you will be able to use cydia
You need to use this boot tethered option every time you reboot.

Sync with itunes first to do a backup just in case.

Again i am new to this.. I just plugged in my phone and it did a 4 step sync by itself.. Then i selected devices held down shift and hit the restore button and chose the 4.2.1 firmware.. Now my phone is doing something.. Am i good so far? Sorry for all the questions but im new to itunes and apple... Ive been in a cave

Why are you restoring to 4.2.1? You said you already had it on there didn't you? All you needed to do was sync once to do a backup.

Now you run redsnow again and choose the boot tethered option.

I told you that i am new and was just following the instructions on the screen from step 1.. I think i got it to work.. I got all my pics and stuff back but not the apps because when i went to itunes it recognized as a new device as if i was just starting it up for the first time.. I hit sync and got my pics and backrounds back no apps but now cydia doesnt work.... Remember i am completely new so try to have patience with me.. I appreciate you walking me through.. Are there things i need to know? Can i still use bluetooth? Thanks

Ya, just redownload the apps and your bluetooth should be fine.

Oh and I was just asking questions, wasnt getting snippy or anything. I'd be using these if I were getting aggravated.

Ok.. I got it to work.. When i opened cydia it asked if i wanted to save my ECID i said yes and at the top of cydia it says" This device has a pending TSS request. It also asked me to do an upgrade on cydia and if i didnt it would not work properly so i clicked upgrade.. Am i good so far?

Also i noticed when i tried to change my picture back on my lock screen it is just a solid black screen but it shows my picture being set up as the lock screen pic.. Why is this? Does everything work the same like the features on the phone like facetime?

Lol.. Never mind.. Its cuz i was plugged in into the comp.. So i guess i successfully did it.. Its not that hard.. I thank you for your help.. So are there some things i should know or keep in mind now that i have my phone jailbroken? Got some questions. 1) Can i get it back to the factory settings if i wanted it to be? 2) If my Phone dies or turns off what happens when i turn it on? Will it be at factory settings? 3) When it DOES die i simply just click the boot tethered option right?

1: You can always restore to wipe the jailbreak if you want
2: No it wont go back to factory settings

What does the phone do once it is turned back on without plugging it into the comp? Will it still work or do i need to plug it in re jailbreak for anything to work like the phone for example?
