Default Wipe jailbroken iphone then re-jailbreak

    Hi -

I recently purchased a jailbroken IPhone and I would like to wipe it kleen myself then re-jailbreak and unlock the phone. The phone I currently have is IPhone 3GS, operating on 4.2.1. I think that I would also like to go to 4.1 since I believe if I go to that version I can turn off the phone or if the battery dies I don't have to worry about it.

Can someone please tell me or give me direction to where I can get the exact details on how to do this? I've never wiped or jailbroken a phone before; however I am fairly computer literate. Also, if the phone is jailbroken, does that mean it is unlocked as well to be used on any carrier? Because I also need it to be unlocked.

Any information would be very helpfull.

    Thanks All!

Download tiny umbrella and press save shsh with your device connected to see what firmware you can go to.

I have Cydia installed on the phone, if I go to that it says:

    "SHSH: iOS 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.1, 4.2.1+"

    Is this what you mean?

Yup, same ones. That means you can go to 4.1 no prob. What is your modem firmware under settings/general/about?

Ok, so all you have to do is download the 4.1 firmware. Shift restore to that in iTunes. You will get a error 1015. Just use tiny umbrella to exit recovery after. Before you start the process open tiny umbrella and then close it. This will set your hosts to cydia so that you use your 4.1 shsh when restoring. Once restored you can activate with a official carrier sim if you have one or just proceed to jailbreak with limera1n/redsnow 0.9.6rc8/greenpoison.

Ok great, just a couple more quick questions:

1 - What is the best site to download the required 4.1 firmware, tiny umbrella and limera1n/redsnow 0.9.6rc8/greenpoison? I don't want to get any viruses.

2 - I assume I download the firmware to my PC? Does it need to be saved in a particular location on the PC?
3 - tiny umbrella, do I download that on my IPhone then run it on the IPhone (before I do anything at all) or should this be done on the PC as well?
4 - By shift restore, do you mean when I open ITunes and connect the IPhone before I hit the restore button I should hold the shift button down on the keyboard?
5 - I presume that when I do the restore this is when the IPhone gets wiped?

Sorry for all the questions but I want to be sure I don't screw anything up. Thanks for your help.

1: You can download the 4.1 firmware from downloads sections at top of page (use firefox to download if possible). Desktop is best but it doesnt have to be saved anywhere in particular
2: Tiny umbrella is for your computer, get it from here: The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
3: Yup, a window will pop up where you can choose your 4.1 firmware
4: Yup, this will wipe it

Sorry but I forgot, when exactly do I hold the shift key when doing the restoring in ITunes?

Also, once it's wiped and restored, if my SIM card works (I think the phone was originally a Bell phone which is my carrier, but I'm not sure) I don't have to jailbreak it then? Or will I have to do it?

And lastly, since it will be on 4.1 then I will be able to shutdown the phone or let the battery die and I won't have any problems with it correct?

Thanks a ton for you patience.

Hold the shift button before hitting the restore button in iTunes.

If you are not restoring to a cfw with cydia built in then you will have to jb once the restore process is complete.

Yes on fw 4.1 the jb is untethered so you shouldn't have any problems shutting off your phone and booting it back up.

Ok, by cwf I presume you are refering to the firmware, so when I download the 4.1 are there options to have it include Cydia or not?

Correct. You can have a custom firmware built with Pwnage Tool that should have Cydia built in.
If you are restoring to an official firmware then you will have to JB the device yourself.

Ah, ok it's all coming together. So which do you recommend I do, with Cydia built in or jb on my own after?

Well seeing as you have the 06.15.00 iPad baseband I would follow these instructions here for the easiest way:

Cool, so that means it will be CWF with Cydia so I shouldn't have to jailbreak again?

If you have a Mac or know someone with a Mac that can create you a cfw then that would be good as well. You can also try looking for one on the net.

Ok, so now I'm a bit confused again. So if I understand correctly I should just download firmware 4.1 from this site then I will just have to jb the phone afterwards using limera1n/redsnow 0.9.6rc8/greenpoison. Where do you recomend I get this software?

Ok, ihappy. Too many questions......my bad. I will try with the info you've provided so far and if I have any issues I will post them then.

    Thanks Again!

Hey Man, thanks so much for your help. I just did it and it worked perfectly. Sorry again for all the questions but having never done it before I just didn't want to make a mistake.

    Thanks again!
