First thing's first, what SHSH blobs do you have saved for that device?
If you don't know, you can check with TinyUmbrella (download at The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella).

how do you use that.... im not exactly sure what the shsh files are they are the jailbroken backups right? or are they just the ipsw's?
also i am getting the error 3194....Last edited by Narusada; 01-13-2011 at 10:37 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

They are signature files for any one particular IPSW for any one particular device. They are absolutely essential for getting proper restores of iOS device's firmwares.
(By your response, I am assuming you do not have any SHSH blobs saved. Please download TinyUmbrella and double-check, else I'll be forced to assume the worst).
EDIT: Error 3194 is Apple's code for "no SHSH blobs."Last edited by Orby; 01-13-2011 at 10:45 PM.

Restore to iOS 4.2.1 from DFU mode (custom firmware preferred) and then jailbreak (if necessary) from there.
What model of device do you have (3G, 3GS, 4)?
EDIT: You ran "Save ALL SHSH" with your phone plugged in via USB, and it didn't even show iOS 4.2.1 (8C148) or (8C148a)?

can i download a similar shsh blob for my phone or are they all unique?
i have a 3gs but isnt there only tethered jailbreak for 4.2.1 i tried that with my itouch and the tethered jail didnt work. i want to unlock my iphone too for tmobile.... and i know how to do all of that for 4.0.1 down but there is no way to downgrade with no shsh files?
yes and nothing showed up for it......
its only found by itunes when in dfu....Last edited by Narusada; 01-13-2011 at 10:52 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

No SHSH files, no downgrade. The SHSH files are all unique per-device, so if you don't have them for your phone, you're SOL.
Do you know if you have a new or old-bootrom 3GS? If you don't know, please post the first five characters of your serial number and I'll tell you. If you have an old-bootrom 3GS, you'll have an untethered jailbreak at 4.2.1. With a new-bootrom one, however, you'll be tethered.
We can preserve your baseband (and thus your unlock) under either circumstance with a custom PwnageTool firmware--if you cannot make one yourself, I can link you to one.

Why do you want to do dfu mode, you are stuck at apple logo right ? It is because you update some essential stuffs in cydia and needed a reboot, a tethered jailbreak will sometime end up in apple logo.

You can't but you can check your ECID from DFU mode and input into tiny umbrella and click save shsh to see what shsh you have , here :
