It's not happening at this current point in time...

I have tried this on a 3GS only though. I did downgrade without the shsh blobs to 4.1
But when you lock the phone unplugged it will turn itself off and potentially be in recovery loop...
The iP4 may different but I doubt it...

You're correct, the iPhone 4 however is no different. The downgrade will work without SHSHs for a jailbroken 4.2.1 iPhone, it will just remain tethered as you have experienced.

I was under the assumption that it won't work at all without shsh blobs...

I went at it really hard in this thread ~~~Is any dev actively working on downgrading 3GS without SHSH?
Please correct me if I'm wrong because I hate 4.2.1 and it runs like poop on my phone for some reason. I would totally love to go back to 4.1.
My phone was an Apple warranty replacement like a week or so ago... Shipped 4.2.1

I would imagine it's a bug. The downgrade might work to 4.1 without SHSHs because the new jb tools did something to it. It explains the part that it is still tethered on 4.1, which it shouldn't be. But it is. Technically, you can't properly downgrade without SHSHs.

If you manage to even downgrade without SHSHs to 4.1, then yes it would still be tethered. Might as well stay on 4.2.1 and be tethered if that's the case. I'd think it wouldn't be safe for your phone to run a faulty downgrade.

thanks so much for your great info you guys are great... i will most probably just do an tethered regular jailbreak till the new release of untethered jailbreak.
does this sound faulty aswell?

If you have SHSHs it will not be tethered. It is only tethered on 4.1 if no SHSHs are saved.
