So I'm doing the redsn0w for 4.2.1 but i want to make sure ALL my contacts are safe,
I don't want ones to disappear even though they're synced with my email..
best way to get all the ones i have on my iphone NOW to copy back over after I update and jailbreak? PLEASE let me know!

Backup in iTunes, sync them with PC, and sync with gmail/mobileme/etc... then you're saving them in three places.
But usually syncing with gmail et al is enough.

even if i do a shift click restore in itunes to 4.2.1?
see i usually use my gmail, but sometimes it just forgets to remember certain contacts..
hmm, gotcha, i guess i could just write down the important one's my gmail always forgets and then put them in if they don't sync.

2nd the gmail sync idea. BTW there is a way to setup gmail on your phone as an exchange account, this will allow contacts to automatically sync to your phone. Coming from android I loved the gmail contact sync feature... any time I changed to a different phone my contacts will auto-sync. I even set it up to pull pictures from facebook.

Common sense will tell you , a restore thru itunes wipes out clean like a new iphone. However, you can always sync back contacts thru itunes from your Microsoft outlook, yahoo address book, google contacts, windows contacts.
You can look under info in itunes : drop menu, you can syc your contacts first with all the four categories and then sync back later.

Here is the link I followed. Just make sure to create a folder on gmail called "My contacts" or something as you do not want it to sync ALL contacts.
Set Up Your Apple Device for Google Sync : Mail, Calendar, & Contacts - Google Mobile Help
More information is available on google.
