Power button broken...how to enter DFU

I downloaded redsn0w for my 3G, and I am stuck where they tell me to hold the power and home button because my power button doesn't work...is there anyway to bypass this?

The new Redsn0w has an option to enter dfu mode. You could try that.

I was trying that, but after you check off the dfu box, u still have to go through the steps; hold power and home...etc.

I'd also like to know how to get around this problem. I'm gonna jailbreak my friends 3Gs but the power doesnt work. Anyone else have any info on this?

Find your current version's IPSW file.
Rename it from ...ipsw to ...zip
Unarchive it, go into ./Firmware/all_flash/all_flash.%MODELNUMBER%.production/
Locate LLB...img3 in that folder.
Delete it.
Locate applelogo...img3
Duplicate it, and rename one copy LLB...img3 (like the file you deleted).
Rezip the file, put the .ipsw back on the end of it, replacing the .zip.
Restore from Recovery mode (use TinyUmbrella's Enter Recovery mode) into that "doctored" IPSW.

That should leave you in a DFU loop (restore should end with Error 6). Won't be pretty, but it should work.

I MAKE NO GUARANTEES YOU WILL BE ABLE TO CLEANLY RESTORE AFTER THIS PROCEDURE! AGAIN, FOLLOW THE ABOVE DIRECTIONS AT YOUR RISK!

I know this is gonna sound real strange and probably wont work for you because I probably had a very random situation but its worth a shot. My power button stopped working over the summer and I just learned to live with it. I realized it worked on occasion when it was in my pocket for an extended period of time while I was working ( I work on a restaurant hot line so Im working in 110+ degrees F) I was trying to figure it out one day and I realized that if I blew into the top button with closed lips (physically put your lips around the button and blow gently) then pressed the button that the button worked again temporarily (usually about 20-30 seconds). doubt it will but hope it helps! lemme know what happens haha

That's probably your only chance to get into DFU if you're not gonna replace your power button.

On another note, depending on the device you might consider another jailbreak method if your power button isn't working or you can't get into DFU.

Which would you recommend? I have a 3Gs on 3.1.3 old bootrom. I'm trying to upgrade to 4.0 to use jailbreakme.com but I really want to get on 4.1. Thanks for your help.

I would recommend you stay on 3.1.3. It being a 3GS it can't restore to custom firmwares without SHSHs and going into owned DFU mode first. So you really can't do much without a power button....

You can use Jailbreakme on 3.1.3 with a 3GS.

You'd need SHSH blobs and DFU to get jailbroken on 4.1...
