Ultrasn0w 1.2 Question
I been reading a lot of sources and guides, but I got a couple questions about Ultrasn0w 1.2
Currently, this is my phone:
Jailbroken and unlocked iPhone 3GS
iOS 4.0.1
Baseband 5.13.04
I want to use iOS 4.2.1, but how do I update it to this iOS? Should I let iTunes update it for me, and then proceed with the Ultrasn0w 1.2 update from the Cydia app?
I just would think that if iTunes updated my iPhone to 4.2.1, I would lose the jailbreak and unlocked, and I won't even be to access the Cydia app.
As far as my baseband is concerned, do I need to update it from 5.13.04, or is that fine?

No, you don't restore to stock 4.2.1 which will lock you out.
In order to preserve your baseband to be unlocked with ultrasn0w, you have to restore to custom firmware. If you have the new bootrom, it will be tethered jailbreak.
If you have the old bootrom, it will be untethered jailbreak. The only problem you are going to get is massive battery drain. Your iphone battery will drain out in a day without even using it.
I suggest if you have 4.1 blob, then you can restore to custom firmware of 4.1, not 4.2.1.
So now my question is what shsh blob do you have ?

Thanks for the reply
In Cydia, it says I have:
SHSH: iOS 3.1.3, 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.1
I do not know what bootrom I have, or unless that explains it.

Doesn't matter what bootrom you have, as long as you go for 4.1, you will still get untethered jailbreak.
If you don't have a mac, use snowbreeze 2.0.2 or 2.1 to build a custom firmware of 4.1. Make sure you uncheck activate my iphone under expert mode > General to avoid other issue. You will need the official sim to trigger it though.
Run redsn0w 0.9.6 any beta version or RC8, browse to OFW 4.1, check only the DFU mode box.
Once dfu is done, run itunes > Shift + restore to Snowbreeze_4.1.ipsw which is already placed on your desktop after you have created it.
Leave your official sim in to trigger into home screen.
You are now jailbroken at 4.1 .
Update Cydia and install Ultrasn0w to unlock your 05.13.04 bb.

Since my network is T-Mobile, I should still uncheck "Activate My iPhone", correct?
For official SIM card.. do you mean the one I currently have in there?
Thanks again

Uncheck the "Activate my Phone" box IF AND ONLY IF you have an AT&T SIM (assuming your iPhone is American) or a SIM for whatever other network the phone was originally sold on. (That's what he means by "official SIM").
If you do not have a SIM for AT&T or whomever, you'll need to check the Activate box, and install SAM to get a legitimate activation... we'll go over that if the need arises.
MAKE SURE TO CHECK THAT YOUR SN0WBREEZE FIRMWARE HAS BASEBAND UPGRADING DISABLED. THIS IS ESSENTIAL FOR YOUR ULTRASN0W UNLOCK!

Thanks, that's what I thought.
I don't know what it is, but this whole process seems very complex. There are so many different forks in the road to take, as well as IF and BUT.. it makes really wonder, if it's even worth it to upgrade to 4.1 over 4.0.1
I have done Android rooting on G1 many times, but this iPhone process seems more a lot more thorough.
I did download Snowbreeze 2.1 and iOS 4.1. After I do the steps there, do I run SAM as you mentioned, or use Redsnow? Seems like so many programs to use!

iYeow, can I proceed forward to the Redsn0w step per your instructions, or because I am on T-Mobile, do I need to follow another guide?
Currently, I have my iOS 4.1 IPSW built with Snowbreeze. I checked Active iPhone (because I am on T-Mobile) and did a refresh on the repo666 URL to get the latest version of Ultrasn0w.
Thanks!
Currently, Snowbreeze has a DFU Pwner by greenpoison screen up that is ready to do onscreen instructions to put my created IPSW on my iPhone.
EDIT: Redsnow wasn't able to recognize the IPSW that I made with Snowbreeze. I'm using Redsnow 0.9.6b1Last edited by shanafan; 01-12-2011 at 11:09 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Make sure you have itunes atleast 9.2
Alright, since you have hactivated a custom firmware of 4.1 made by Snowbreeze.
Run redsn0w 0.9.6 any beta version or RC8, browse to stock 4.1 fw , not custom firmware of 4.1. Check the box dfu mode only.
Once dfu is done, run itunes : shift + restore to custom firmware of 4.1
Now you are at Home screen.
Update cydia, install repo.bingner.net and install sam the two things from sam.
Also install ultrasn0w to unlock.
I assume that you have either edited your hosts file to point to cydia or used tiny umbrella to save all your shsh and then close it before you can proceed with restoring to custom firmware of 4.1, otherwise the famous 3194 will pop up.Last edited by iYeow; 01-12-2011 at 11:23 PM. If I made a custom firmware using Snowbreeze, how does that relate to using the stock 4.1 firmware with Redsnow? Regardless, the stock 4.1 fw wasn't recognized. I downloaded the firmware from two different sources, in case one was corrupted.

When you run redsn0w , you have to browse to stock firmware, if you browse to cfw , it will not be recognized. Cfw is for restore thru itunes. Stock fw is for you to run redsn0w so you can proceed to do the next step which is dfu mode.

I downloaded
ModMyi Forums - Downloads - iPhone 3GS 4.1
And
redsn0w 0.9.6b1
And it says it is unable to recognize the specific IPSW
Why doesn't this guide mention redsnow?

Yeah 9.6b1 is outdated. That's that issue with not recognizing 4.1 (hopefully).

That guide doesn't mention redsn0w (or anything else) for Pwned DFU because it appears it was released before limera1n was popularized...

Redsnow recognized the iOS 4.1

Well I think I am pretty much ready to go now, but
"I assume that you have either edited your hosts file to point to cydia or used tiny umbrella to save all your shsh and then close it before you can proceed with restoring to custom firmware of 4.1, otherwise the famous 3194 will pop up."
Is leaving me with the question of, is this just for a safe backup or why would I look into this?
Thanks for all the help!Last edited by shanafan; 01-13-2011 at 01:05 AM.

If I can get some help with this, I would appreciate it. I thought Cydia automatically backed up SHSH? My Cydia app says I have SHSH: iOS 3.1.3, 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.1

Yes, cydia automatically back up all your blobs but your computer doesn't do that unless you tell it it to download and point it to cydia. Tiny umbrella will download for you only if you ask TU to download by clicking save shsh. When you close TU, by default it will set your hosts file to cyida.
