The SHSH files are in case you decide you want to downgrade and restore to a previous firmware. Seeing as you have all the way back to 3.1.3 it means you can restore all the way back to fw 3.1.3 if you decided to. Cydia saves your SHSH files if you told it to and Tiny Umbrella does the same.

Oh ok, thanks!
In Tiny Umbrella, there are different check boxes for settings. Should only the Save SHSH be checked?
So, in a way, this is just creating a backup. Well, I guess I am confused because in the Tiny Umbrella directions, it tells me to do the Restore part in iTunes. But, I should stop at that section, right?

You use TU to backup your shsh blobs that are stored in cydia. Then you use the feature of tss server to verify your blobs when running itunes, at some point when restoring firmware in itunes, it tries to verify with apple, of course apple will say no if apple is not signing the firmware, this is where TU tss server comes in, it tricks itunes it is verifying with apple but actually it is verifying with TU. Hope this will make you understand better.

Makes more sense now, thank you!
Well I got iOS 4.1 on my iPhone 3GS! Thanks for everyone's input
Now, I am looking into this SAM thing.
My iPhone is currently being sync'd, so I can't just this right now but if my baseband was 5.13.04, then it still should be, right?
If it is, I don't need to worry about SAM then?Last edited by shanafan; 01-14-2011 at 07:34 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

If you have a valid sim that will trigger your iphone into homescreen and do the jailbreak, then you don't need Sam at all. Even if you used sam and after installing Ultrasn0w to unlock, you can remove sam as well.

Well I am using a T-Mobile SIM, so I should get SAM regardless?
I unlocked using Ultrasn0w

If this iphone is from US, do you have an ATNT sim which does not even need any service on it will do the trick.

Then you are already jailbroken, all you need now is to update Cydia and install Ultrasn0w, then you will get signal.
SAM is only for guys who uses redsn0w to hactivate which causes battery drain, and therefore uses SAM to avoid battery drain, you don't need this at all.
Oh ! wait a minute , did you use Snowbreeze to hactivate ?, try out if you can get signal first by installing Ultrasn0w .Last edited by iYeow; 01-14-2011 at 08:10 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

You will not have battery drain doing your above mentioned method, go check your youtube, i am quite sure it is not working.
And also when you sync, at the end of syncing, it will say somethig like an error has occured, this is due to hacitvation by snowbreeze, you are not getting all the cert from apple for youtube to connect.Last edited by iYeow; 01-14-2011 at 08:35 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Ok, well the sync has about 1,000 songs to go. If Youtube does not work, proceed with SAM?

Ok, so the Sync had no errors when it was done, but Youtube doesn't work
And I am still on 5.13.04 bb
Hmm, now I am getting Cydia errors, along the line of
http://ispaziorepository.com open nodename or servname provided, or not known
UPDATE!
I installed SAM and Youtube works
I just get a cached failure in Cydia now. It says it fails to fetch files.Last edited by shanafan; 01-14-2011 at 09:56 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Custom firmware created by snowbreeze 2.0.2 or 2.1 shouldn't have Cydia cache failure. Why don't you install the new version of Cydia.
Google search and get the new version of Cydia ( 3366) and put it in root/media/cydia/autoinstall folder and reboot your iphone.

Ok, I got Cydia 3366 on it, and it does seem to be working better but occasionally, like when I refresh the Changes page, I see this at top as a status line
OpenDB: Error nodename
But it doesnt always happen so I guess I am in the clear?
