Looking for advice. iPhone 3G JB on iOS4.0.
My phone is a jailbroken and unlocked, iPhone 3G on iOS4.0 on T-mobile. I was wondering what steps I should take in order to completely wipe the device and return to 3.x software (jailbroken/unlocked). I am not interested in keeping my modifications.
I am unhappy with the memory free on my device and have tried everything, including disabling multitasking to free memory. At this point I am ready to leave the 4.x software.
As just wondering: I jailbroke about 1 month after a JB was available for the 4.0 software, is there a chance that I won't have memory problems if I break on 4.0 with a newer JB release?
Thanks for any help.

You're right, 4.0 is an absolute turd on the 3G. 4.1 and 4.2.1 are a bit better (usable) but 3.1.3 is the best choice for speed.
Just put your device in DFU mode and restore to a stock 3.1.3 IPSW (grab it here: http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....8_Restore.ipsw).
NOTE: If your phone is not factory-unlocked, i.e., you rely on ultrasn0w for your T-Mobile cell service, you MUST jailbreak it (I'd recommend Spirit--http://www.spiritjb.com) and install ultrasn0w via Cydia.

Thank you for the help, I definitely appreciate it.
I will be doing this tonight, but before that IPSW finishes downloading, I wanted to ask if there was any quick or easy way to back up my applications or content concerning contacts and such. I was kind of having second thoughts about eliminating all my old contacts, is this necessarily complicated to do what I've described?
It is both Jailbroken and Unlocked at the moment.

A backup in iTunes will preserve all your application settings and contacts--the actual contacts themselves are preserved in Address Book, Outlook, Exchange (whatever you use to sync them) and the applications themselves are stored in iTunes along with all your music, podcasts, etc.

Well, first I had to locate iTunesLibrary.ilt and remove it to force iTunes to reconstruct a library as the earlier version did not recognize the newer versions build of the library.
Just recieved this message:
The iPhone "My Iphone" cannot be used because it requires iTunes 9.2 or later.
Is there any way around this or should I explore other jailbreak methods?
EDIT: Oh, okay. I just saw your post. I may try it with 10 if it has been reported to work before, although the website states these requirements:
Any iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch on firmware 3.1.2, 3.1.3, or 3.2 (not 3.2.1).
An activated device: one not stuck on the Connect to iTunes or Emergency Call screen.
Any version of iTunes 9 earlier than 9.2
Syncing with iTunes before trying this is highly recommended.Last edited by EastArcadia; 02-15-2011 at 09:58 PM.

As far as I can remember it works with iTunes 10. No guarantees, but shouldn't be a huge issue if it doesn't.
If not, Google search for a download of redsn0w 0.9.4, and when it asks you to point to your currently installed IPSW, point it to 3.1.2. That definitely will do it.

I will go with redsn0w for now. I suppose that would be the best idea, simply because Spirit is saying it does not support 3g on 4.0 via the application.
