Default 1st Time Jailbreaker Needs Clarification

Hi guys, could someone out there tell me if I am the right track to jailbreak my iPhone? This will be my first time and I do NOT want to screw it up.

I have an iPhone 3Gs, OLD boot rom with 4.2.1 firmware and I am running a Windows PC with XP. According to the guide on this site, I can get an untethered jailbreak using Redsn0w 0.9.6b6 and custom firmware for that. Is that correct?

The SHSH thing confuses me. I do not need to unlock this phone so I can ignore the whole shsh/baseband aspect. Is that correct?

Redsn0w is now on 0.9.6b6, which from what I read will probably be the last beta version before a full windows version is released. Should I wait until the full version comes out or am I good to go with the latest beta version? And if I jailbreak now, do I need to re-jailbreak when the non-beta version is released?

    I really appreciate the help!

You don't need custom firmware since you have no desire to unlock. Simply run the newest version of redsn0w and you're good to go. I would still recommend saving those SHSH, but you don't need to worry about them for this. You shouldn't have to rejailbreak later- the beta part is generally concerned with untethering the new bootroms.
