That sounds like a custom firmware error. The 3g can restore to any firmware below 4.0 with no problems. After that I believe it will need shsh blobs to restore to said firmware.

If you encounter error 1015 when you restore to IOS 4.2.1, it means that you have the ipad baseband.
So what you need now is a custom firmware for 3g of 4.2.1, then read this : Thread post #43
You can use redsn0w 0.9.6 any beta version just to put you into DFU /Geohot's DFU mode before restoring to CFW of 4.2.1Last edited by iYeow; 01-11-2011 at 10:18 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

First you run redsn0w 0.9.6b6, browse to OFW 4.2.1, check only the box dfu mode only.
Once DFU is done, a message will appear in redsn0w.
Now at this point, run itunes > Shift + restore to CFW of 4.2.1.
Once restored, you are already jailbroken at 4.2.1
Update Cydia and install Ultrasn0w to unlock your ipad baseband.
You must have the latest itunes.
