    Default iphone 2g downgrade/jailbreak from 4.2.1 ??

I have an old iphone 2g that I was trying to jailbreak on a Mac. It was 3.1.2 and I attempted to use redsn0w to JB it. Something went wrong, and it got stuck "waiting for reboot". Had to restore it, and was holding down the wrong key for the Mac to specify firmware, now it is at 4.2.1.

Am I stuck here, or is it possible to get it down to 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 to use blackra1n or redsn0w, or even JB at 421. I don't need to unlock or anything, just want to get cydia on it.

    Thanks!

Are you sure you have a 2g, the highest fw you can go is 3.1.3.

Does it have a silver backing ?

I agree. The old 2g iPhone cant not reach ios 4 because the hardware is not compatible with it.

Either a 3gs or 3g, does it have a compass icon. I guess you can't see now as your iphone is not bootable, correct.

If its the silver metal backing then its a 2g model. If its a black or white plastic backing then its either a 3g or 3gS model.

At the back is the apple logo black or silver ? That 's the only difference you can tell physically.

My 3gs has a silver logo

Alright , very simple to prove what type you have.
Put your iphone into dfu mode, download the stock 3g 3.1.3 firmware.
In itunes, shift + restore to 3g 3.1.3 ipsw. If it doesn't say incompatible firmware and it should restore successfully.
Error 1015 is imminent, use Exit recovery from the feature of tiny Umbrella.
Now you are at emergency screen.
    Try the above out.

If it works, then you have proven that it is a 3g and you have successfully downgraded to 3.1.3 firmware.

It's a subtle thing but the 3G has more of a dull gray font on the back. The 3GS has shiny silver font. Otherwise, iYeow's method will for sure determine it.
