3gs gets stuck on white screen after "preparing iphone for restore"
sooo i bought this 3gs from a local trading site.
it was carrying a baseband of 6.15.00 and running on tethered 4.2.1 jailbreak.
i wanted to reset it so that i can sync it to my itunes. what a bad move.
I did the following things:
i tried to downgrade it to 4.1 (i didnt know that i needed the backup shsh(
after a few tries, it got stuck on infinite loop. somehow got it out.
weird enough, i was able to run 4.1 on it but it was running tethered through a custom firmware restore (4.1)
i had to go into redsnow to boot it all the time.
then it started to go bonkers.
everytime it would go to sleep, a few seconds later, it goes straight into dfu mode.
i would have to plug it again to boot it.
so i tried to bring it back to 4.2.1 through a custom firmware that i found that was running baseband 6.15 and was hacktivated.
didnt work. everytime i try to restore it, itunes would always have a problem in the part where it says "preparing iphone for restore".
the screen would turn on but its only white.
any ideas on what i can do?
here's a video of whats happening.

You have to put it into recovery mode first with your iphone plugged in then run Redsn0w to put you into DFU mode.

It stucks at the white screen and gives error 28 as far i could see..
To get past the error 28 , u would have to let ur battery drain fully (may take upto a week)and then continue with restore process
Or
You could open up your iphone and disconnect the battery and wait for an hour and try again with the restore process.
I was having the same problem as urs, and i still don't know what to do,as the phone always enters DFU mode after screen time out..please let me know if u find a solution

Problem solved. Took the iPhone apart. Disconnected the battery for a few mins. Put it back together again. Plugged it in, started iTunes and proceeded to restoring using original firmware 4.2.1. Got an error 1015 as expected and I couldnt have been happier to see that error. Phone went straight into recovery mode after that. From there, used redsnow 0.9.6b5 to enter pwned Dfu mode, then went back to iTunes to install custom firmware 4.2.1. After it installed, phone got stuck on the apple logo screen after restarting. This was expected and I just used redsnow to boot tethered and installed cydia after and proceeded to jailbreaking. Everytime the phone restarted, I just had to boot tethered.

Same thing if you get error 28, the screen will flash white and then black.

sorry man, but your other option would be to try and drain your battery.. that would take about a week or more. Im really not sure how you can go about draining it.
Thats why i opted to have someone disassemble it for me and disconnect the battery
