Can I re-jailbreak a 3gs without an ATT sim card?
I have an ATT 3gs iPhone that I jailbroke and unlocked and borrowed to a friend in Australia. She has a sim card in the phone from an Australian phone company. Well, she took an update and the phone lost the unlock.
When she turns the phone on, it says "Insert a valid SIM with no PIN lock to activate iPhone".
Does anyone know how I get past this screen? Is there a way to jailbreak this phone again if she doesn't have an ATT sim card to slip in and do the jailbreak? ThanksLast edited by gobble; 01-12-2011 at 09:52 PM.

Depending on what firmware she is on you can hactivate by jailbreaking. I assume she is on 4.2.1 since she updated, you would then tell her to use redsnow 0.9.6rc8

I assume that's the version of firmware she ended up with. I'll try walking her through that. Thanks.

Can I ask a stupid question? Why when I download the IPSW files from here is there no IPSW file in the .zip?

You either need to rename the extension to .ipsw or redownload it with firefox.

Funny, I was actually just trying the rename to see what would happen. Thanks again.

Tried to hactivate/jailbreak with Redsn0w and it didn't go as planned. Any ideas? We went through the jailbreak process, added the IPSW file, selected install Cydia, pressed all the right buttons at the right time, and it appeared to work through the jailbreak but at the end we were left with a phone that only displays the Apple logo and can't be turned off. Any ideas what might have gone wrong or what we should do different?

It may be you are picking the wrong option when redsnow asks if you have new or old model.

I selected old, which it is according to the serial number, but during the first jailbreak attempt it came back with a message that new should have been selected. Retried saying new and now can't get past the apple logo.

You should download idetector to find out what bootrom you have: iH8sn0w.com | Jailbreak your iPod touches and iPhones
Sometimes going by serial number isnt accurate

On 4.2.1 it is just redsnow right now. You can mess up your phone if you pick the wrong option in redsnow.

The wrong new vs. old option?
I selected old based on the serial number and at the end it told me to redo and select new. So that's what I did. I could have screwed something up?
As far as other options, I just tried install Cydia.
This is soooooooooooooo much easier with an ATT sim card installed.

That idetector can tell you for sure what your bootrom is even if redsnow was telling you to use new, it is best to find out for sure.
