Are you using the latest PwnageTool and iTunes? Did you let PwnageTool direct you into 'DFU' mode before loading the custom firmware with iTunes?

My question was: did you follow the PwnageTool countdown timer to enter DFU mode?

According to: iTunes Errors - The iPhone Wiki

    Error 1600
Custom firmware can't be restored on a device with DFU Mode. The software of the iPhone isn't patched. Go into Recovery Mode (Pwnage Tool up to 4.0.1) or start Pwnage Tool and click "DFU" at the top and go with this tutorial into the DFU mode. During that process the software gets patched and the custom firmware should run without any problems.

I've always used Pwnage. 99% of the time I used DFU mode. One time that didn't work and ended up using recovery mode (home button, connect to iTunes) did. Go figure

Hey it worked using the pwnage - i thought i had it in DFU considering i did the same steps and itunes would recognize it with nothing on the screen.

    thanks!

Glad it worked. The pwn'd DFU was a new requirement and it took me twice to get it right.
