Default iPhone 3GS goes into DFU mode on screen timeout after Pwnage Tool 3.1.3

Hello, I'm having a very strange problem and am hoping one of you can help.

I have a 3GS, with iOS 4.1 and 6.15.00 BB installed, that I jailbroke using custom firmware prepared with Pwnage Tool 4.1.3 unlock edition. After the jailbreak everything seems to work, but if I let the phone sit for a couple minutes and the screen times out it then the phone automatically goes to DFU mode, requiring a tethered reboot from RedSn0w (version 0.9.6rc7). Even when I turn the screen off using the hold (top) button, after a couple of minutes the phone seems to automatically revert back to DFU mode. I've trying using 4.2.1 also and get the same result.

I've also tried using the latest versions of Limera1n and GreenPois0n but they don't seem to work on my phone (the phone goes to restore mode, an endless loop, afterwards that I cannot get out of even by using a tethered boot). I have had better luck with RedSn0w but it always seems to hang at the "Installing Activation Bundles" screen so that doesn't work either.

Any ideas on how to fix the auto DFU issue, or alternatively on how I can get past that "Installing Activation Bundles" screen using RedSn0w?

Many thanks to all in advance.

You arent supposed to use the boot tethered option on 4.1. It is only meant for new bootrom devices on 4.2.1. The only way to fix your issue is to let the battery completely drain out or remove it for a few hours. Then you will have to restore. When you restore, restore to a regular 4.1, when you get 1015 error use tiny umbrella to exit recovery. Then use redsnow 0.9.6rc7, browse for a regular 4.1 firmware and only install cydia, do not pick any other options.

Thanks a lot x98car, but that is actually exactly what I did. Before I had an error 28, so I disconnected the battery, let it sit for a couple hours, and then restored to original 4.1 and used Redsnow 0.9.7rc7 in the manner you described (only selecting Cydia) and it got me here - a phone that shouldn't (but for some reason does) require a tethered boot and automatically goes into DFU mode when the screen turns off. I read somewhere that this might have something to do with me having a new bootrom, but am not sure.

    Any other ideas?

Are you sure you have new bootrom?

Then you can either restore to custom firmware of 4.1 or stock 4.1 ( jailbreak with Limera1n if you don't require unlock) to get untethered jailbreak.

Thanks again - but it's strange... I tried that too. Restoring to custom firmware of 4.1 gets me to where I am now. If I restore to stock 4.1 and use Limera1n then it gets stuck in a recovery mode loop (when I use Tiny Umbrella to exit recovery mode it reboots right back into it again). Either way though I also need it unlocked. Am planning on using Ultras0w. Am thinking maybe the best way would be to try to jailbreak successfully is to use Redsn0w, but I can't get past the "Installing Activation Bundles" step.

As for the bootrom, it is [iBoot-359.3.2], which as I understand it is the new bootrom unfortunately.

Am getting desperately frustrated, so any advice would be appreciated. By the way, not sure if this is relevant or not, but it is a new 3GS bought from the Apple Store about a week ago.

My phone is currently in dfu state and wouldn't come back on. Im waiting for the battery for get completely drained before i try the restore.

Did you try updating to 4.2.1...i mean with that you'll get tethered boot which you are already getting on 4.1 but it might solve your 'going back into dfu state' problem?

Default Solution to iphone going into dfu mode when it Sleeps

    hi,
the only current solution to the phone going into dfu mode when the phone goes to sleep is to install "insomnia" from cydia. It is an app that allows wifi and other apps to continue to run even when the iphone is put to sleep. Leaving insomnia on thus solves this problem.
I had been using this solution until i accidently let my phone completely die out of battery and could no longer boot.

Thats actually a pretty good idea. Might drain battery faster but should keep you out of dfu.

Wait... I think I see the problem here.

When you don't have SHSH blobs for a particular firmware (in this case 4.1; since you got the phone inside of a week ago, there's no way you could have blobs from three months ago), it behaves in this manner--tethered and horrendously unstable jailbreak.

You'll have to restore to 4.2.1 via DFU (stock with normal DFU or a PwnageTool firmware with pwned DFU) to get out of this hangup. I'd advise the latter myself.
