I want to upgrade from 3.1.3 to 4.1. I am wanting to preserve my baseband just incase I ever need it. I'm on windows so I am supposed to use sn0wbreeze to make a custom ipsw. Will I have to jailbreak again after I restore with a custom firmware?
And will I get the new cydia app, or the old one? Also, is there an app that will back up my SMS, map locations, call history, etc. I will probaly just install the cydia apps manually. Any other tips and suggestion are appreciated.
Downloads:
1) PwnageTool made custom 4.1 ipsw
2) iTunes 10 and up
3) Redsn0w 0.9.6b2
4) stock 4.1 ipsw
Steps:
1) Find a custom 4.1 ipsw made by PwnageTool 4.1.2. You can either search the web, or if you know someone with a Mac have them build and send the custom fw to you. If you have a friend with a Mac, just borrow it and follow the above steps for Mac PwnageTool method.
2) Once you get a hold of a custom 4.1 firmware, open Redsn0w 0.9.6b2
3) browse to stock 4.1 ipsw (not the custom one)
4) Follow Redsn0w's timer to set device into DFU mode
5) open iTunes
6) shift + restore to the custom 4.1 ipsw made by PwnageTool
7) after restore, it should give you access to your home screen (if you hacktivated).
8) if you didn't hacktivate, you'll be at the emergency call screen. Activate with your SIM in iTunes now to access springboard.
9) unlock with Ultrasn0w if needed.

Steps:
1) open Sn0wbreeze 2.0.2 and select the stock 4.1 ipsw
2) in General submenu, select desired options such as Multitasking and Wallpaper etc. If you need to hacktivate, select it. If you have an official carrier's SIM, don't select it.
3) add any repos you want, including "repo666.ultrasn0w.com" if it isn't already in there. You can always manually do this in Cydia later if you don't want to do it now.
4) build the custom firmware. It can take some time.
5) open iTunes
6) shift + restore to the custom firmware (it is saved on your desktop, don't move it from there for now so you can find it easily).
7) after restore, it should give you access to your home screen (if you hacktivated).

Ok, i just opened tiny umbrella and it say i have shsh's on file for 3.1.3 and 4.0.1, but when i open cydia it shows them from 3.1.3 to 4.2.1+
so do i have 4.1 or not? if not is 4.0.1 even worth upgrading to?
Yes, you can restore to custom firmware of 4.1 to preserve your baseband. So go ahead and create one from Snowbreeze. You can use ireb 4.1 release 2 or redsn0w 0.9.6b6 to put you into DFU mode and then run itunes : shift + restore to cfw of 4.1 which is placed on your desktop after you have finished creating it.
OK, without your iphone plug in, run TU , select your device and click save shsh, your 4.1 shsh blob will be downloaded , start Tss Server and restore again. Make sure you have the latest TU.
Make sure you have atleast itunes 9.2, use redsn0w 0.9.6b6 and browse to stock 4.1 firmware, check only the box dfu. Once dfu is done, run itunes , shift + restore to this custom firmware of 4.1 ( it is not activated, rename .zip to .ipsw in your PM box )
