Cant get into DFU mode anymore!
Ok so I have got into DFU before on this phone and iPod so I know how to do it, since I have tried it again I have looked at multiple guides for it too. Doesn't work anyway.
I have an iPhone 3g and im trying to jailbreak it on 4.2.1
The mc model is
My home button works but is slightly broken, which I think could be the problem although I have managed it before.
Either way I cant get it into DFU mode, any alternate way without using the physical home button?

If your home button is a little finicky that could definitely do it. Might want to look into getting that fixed.

So it only cost me £70 for the phone and by the looks of things it will cost me about £50 to get it fixed, plus it still works anyway its just doesn't make that click sound. Also my old iPod had the same problem and I could still jailbreak with it.
EDit:
unless you know a super cheap way of fixing it.
oh also I have jailbroken it before with the button in this condition.Last edited by SoulPursuer; 01-03-2011 at 05:26 AM.

ok, so what exactly happens when you try entering dfu, and what method are you using? From a starting point of being on or off?

I'm folowing the redsnow instructions. Phone Off, Turn on, Hold home and power for 10 seconds where I know it should normally do a little reset and then you hold down just the home button, but in my case the apple logo stays up whether I continue holding the home button and power or I release the power button. Eventually it just boots up like normal with my holding the home button still. Sometimes it asks to be connected into iTunes.
but I follow the redsnow instructions.
I know the home button works as I can do the hard reboot where you hold the home and power button.

Try doing it from being on. Plug in the phone, hold home and power button for 10 seconds then let go of power and keep holding home for another 10 seconds.

Make sure your home button and power button (the sides of this as well) are clean to avoid any sticking.

Ok so i reckon my home button staying held on for long enough or something. Is it easy to repair a home button yourself? I have seen a couple of videos.
YouTube - How To Fix iPhone 3G And 3Gs Home Button
is it worth trying this method or should I buy a button?

Replacing a home button is pretty hard. You need to remove the frame from the digitIzer to do it which is glued together.

like i said make said they are clean, i would get a pin and carefully clean all of the home button and power button, Pin, Q tip, and a little alcohol.
Worth a try before taking your phone to bits

With a pin to get gently down the sides to dig out any big bits of dirt. Then with a Q-Tip with a BIT of alcohol on it. This will let a tiny bit down the sides and clean it, and this done with pressing the button up and down as you clean round, may just be enough to get it working smooth. Just be gentle and dont rush

Do you have another computer that you can plug it into to try? Or different cable?

Dude i would still try cleaning it, if it helped a bit now it will help more, the more you clean it. You need to make sure it is smooth, so we can eliminate that as the problem

And as x98car says try another cable
And dont for get a little thanks goes a long way, so hit the button when somebody helps

Oh also I cant really see how I can clean it much more than I have as with a pin all I can really do is scrap at the sides of the home button a bit.
