How to upgrade iPhone 3G to 4.2.1 + unlock WITHOUT ipad baseband?

Hi all!

I've been trying to figure this out for a few days and can't find a straight answer!
I have:
iPhone 3G; FW 4.1; BB 05.13.04 (jailbroken and unlocked)

And I would like to upgrade to 4.2.1 (because apparently the 3G is more responsive on 4.2.1) and I need the phone to be hacktivated, jailbroken and unlocked (carrier)

I know this is achievable with redsn0w and iPad BB but I heard there are problems with battery life as well as other things.

Is there a way to:
either upgrade to 4.2.1 while keeping the 05.13.04 BB and jailbreak and hacktivation (like what would sn0wbreeze do if it was available for 4.2.1)

or upgrade to 4.2.1 and change BB to NOT-iPad-BB and get jailbreak and hacktivation and carrier unlock?

Make sure you update your itunes first.
You can use Pwnage tools 4.1.3 to create a custom firmware of 4.2.1 with no BB update to preserve your 05.13.xx BB to be unlocked by Ultrasn0w.
Use Redsn0w 0.9.6b6 and browse to stock 4.2.1, check only the box , dfu mode only.
Once you have achieved dfu mode, run itunes, shift + restore to custom firmware of 4.2.1.
I have included a copy in your PM box.

Wow thanks for the quick solution!
Just to be sure, what options are activated in the ipsw you sent me?
I'm guessing no multitasking
hacktivation? (which I need)
battery percentage? (which would be great)
background wallpaper on springboard? (I hope not cause I tried once and the phone was soooo slow...)
custom boot logos?

I have a similar setup except I have 05.14.02 instead of 13. I also don't need hacktivation since I have access to ATT SIM card. Problem is, I don't have access to a Mac right now so I can't do the custom IPSW.

How do you do this without a Mac and no Sn0wbreeze?

sn0wbreeze is like pwnagetool but for windows. You already have a baseband that cannot be unlocked and youre using AT&T so you dont really need to preserve baseband although I try to encourage preserving baseband.

IYeow - sounds like updating a 3G to 4.2.1 without updating BB is possible. Except no access to a MAC to create custom firmware. Any chance you can point me to one that is available?

Can you unlock with a 3gs 4.2.1 5.15.04BB and not use the ipad BB?

If your bb is 05.14 or 05.15, then you have to go with ipad bb to unlock but you might have to do some sacrifice. Read about ipad bb in www.devteam.org

ya im trying the ipad bb with redsn0w on 3gs but it gets as far as waiting for reboot message and sits there and a message pops up in windows saying this device can perform faster connected to usb 2.0.everytime i try same thing.
running redsnow in xp sp2 compatability mode also.
anyone got any ideas
