Question want to jailbreak and unlock... but...

i have an iPhone 3GS and i'm looking into jailbreak and unlocking but i cant seem to find the answers to my questions (and i'm aware they may seem dumb since i'm pretty new to this) so im hoping here will be able to help...

    1. iPhone is locked to Vodafone(AUS) but i want to stay with my current carrier Optus(AUS), i need to know how to unlock and still be able to recieve MMS and use WAP (I'm only used to dealing with Nokia)since i'm pretty sure it doesn't have a cache of system settings.

    2. whats the current brick rate while jailbreaking? i've heard that it's near impossible but would still like to check.

    3. what is the easiest and most reliable Jailbreak tool i've heard good things about Limera1n and Redsn0w.

    4. most importantly can a layman do it? i can get it professionally done for $75 or i can have a bang at it (fairly tech savvy just not with Apple products)

any help would be greatly appreciated,

Fellow aussie; all of this depends on what firmware you are currently running and aswell as your baseband.

    To check these, go into settings>general>about;

For firmware installed will say "version........."

    For baseband it will say
    "modem firmware.....'

Let me know what these say and i can tell you what you can do.

In terms of bricking - it's highly unlikely you will destroy it, as 99% of all software issues can be fixed with some program. So it's very safe.

And also different tools are for different firmwares.

And what's a layman lmao? Never heard of that before. And if its being 'professionally' done for 75 bucks...I'd say they are just using the same tools you can download for free..

    Good luck

baseband is 5.14.02, i've done my research and found i have to upgrade to 6.15? (or something... loong night) since i'm so used to my little Nokia 2730 this is just a slight jump in technology (although at face value without apps or jailbroken the nokia does more...) so i'm just testing the water so to speak before i just dive right in.

btw layman: ordinary fellow or someone not in the know (a doctor often puts his diagnosis in laymans terms)

So I take your firmware is 4.2.1...
atm a 4.2.1 jailbreak is what they called tethered, which means everytime your iphone reboots you need to re run the jailbreak procedure - so so not worth it, especially if you've got an iphone. I'd suggest wait a bit for a tethered jb, but there is no way to be certain when that will come out.

And with the baseband 6.15.00, the iPad bb there have been alot of issues that have been reported with it, the main one the loss of your gps function. And it is impossible to downgrade your bb, so your stuck with that until apple releases a new bb, in a 4.3 update or higher, and it voids your warranty.

But what you choose to do is obviously up to you and if you think the risk is worth the outcome by all means go for it but just know there are certain risks D:

And btw redsn0w is the tool you'd need for installing the iPad bb.

    nope i'm in luck it's 4.1.

    so i'm green to go?
if thats the case then yeah just give me a hand with the WAP questions and i'll start working on that fix.

Alright sweet you're lucky then - I miss read your baseband. I would say use redsn0w to jb, I've used all three 4.1 jb and I've had crashes on all of them except redsn0w. Maybe just look for a YouTube vid that'll take you through it. You'll want to tick 'install iPad baseband' because that's the only unlockable baseband atm.

WAP is wireless access point yeah? So like wifi? It shouldn't interrupt anything with that...I haven't had any problems, and mms should work too, but I can't be 100% sure because my iphone is officially unlocked, I've never needed to unlock it and hence don't really pay a whole heap of attention to unlocking news..but I know a bit. I dont think you'll get any problems with mms and wap though..

    Good luck

Oh and before you do anything - download tinyumbrella (google it) and save your shsh blobs, see what you've got there then run redsn0w

TinyUmbrella did exactly what it was supposed to do, and it outputted the results one would expect for a new-to-jailbreak 3GS. Nothing to worry about.

I would strongly recommend jailbreaking with redsn0w 0.9.6b6 (available free of charge for download at sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files). When it asks for an IPSW file, point it to the 3GS's stock 4.1 firmware (available for download from Apple at http://appldnld.apple.com/iPhone4/06...7_Restore.ipsw).

Run redsn0w, point it to the above file, and it'll ask you if this is the newer (fixed) model. If you're jailbreaking on the same phone pictured in your screenshot (serial number begins 86936), the answer is NO, it's NOT the fixed model. Select "Install Cydia" and "Install iPad baseband" and then let redsn0w do its thing (you'll need to enter DFU mode to use redsn0w).

Once redsn0w is complete, you may need a Vodafone SIM (even if it's dead) to activate the phone. From there, open Cydia, and install ultrasn0w. Once ultrasn0w is installed, you're golden.
