Deciding to restore 3GS. Just confirm if this is the right decision

I want to update to 4.1 but i am really confused. First of all, some say that updating to 4.1 will also update bb but it can be preserved using tinyumb. THEN I READ THAT tu works only on ip4 and not 3gs. Which is correct?


Then i can Jb it thru greenpoison or limerain ( tell me which is better)? BUT THEN I READ that ultrasnow unlock doesnt work with 4.1 :/


Then i read smwhre that jb nd unlock only works on old bootrom


So i really dont understand what to do :$


What should i do? Nd btw i have shsh for 4.01 nd 4.1 both

I am using 3GS with firmware 4.0.1 (8A306) and baseband 5.13.04. I want to restore the same firmware because i think 2-3 days back, it started giving me serious battery issues. It drains almost 10% battery ON STANDBY every 1-1.5 hours. So i thought a restore should fix this

Since this is the first time i'll do any restore/upgrade so i just wanted an expert to confirm that the steps i will perform are correct with the most suitable/stable results

I have gathered all this info from searches



1. Download the 3gs firmware from the download site

2. Use itunes to restore using SHIFT + click RESTORE

3. the phone will reboot and i will have a stock 4.0.1

4. use jailbreakme to jailbreak and use ultrasnow to unlock

well, is this right or am i missing something??

can someone explain the purpose of SHSH? I found out that in my cydia, there is "4.0.1" written in green so it means that i have SHSH for my firmware. So where was the SHSH used in the above steps or did i miss out something?

You missed one step in the very beginning. Download tiny umbrella, plug iphone in and click save shsh. Then once shsh downloaded, close TU and proceed as stated above.

Thanks for your reply. And just one last thing, which ios do you prefer? i think i am fine with 4.0.1 but should i update to 4.1 maybe?

EDIT: Tinyumbrella doesnt show my SHSH :/ I remember that cydia showed that i have SHSH for 3.13, 4.0, 4.01, 4.02, 4.1 but TU says no shsh are saved? :$

EDIT4: lol sorry i had to click save SHSH :P i thought that i have to select shsh and then save it but it turns out that isnt the case, instead its the other way round :P lol

did you click save my shsh? I'm running 4.1 on my 3gs, I reckon it's the best firmware. stable and safe. are you an unlocker? if you are update firmware with pwnage tool or sn0wbreeze as 4.1 has no safe unlock. or stable for that matter. 4.1 is the way to go!

hahaha yea i got that shsh part :P

and yea i use carrier unlock but i think carrier unlock doesnt work with 4.1 right? I can use limera1n for jailbreak but i cant unlock

and my baseband is 5.13.04

5.13.04 is possible to unlock with ultrasnow. if you're still on 4.0.1, upgrade to 4.1 with either pwnage tool for mac or sn0wbreeze for pc. I'm not an unlocker so I don't know the exact version to use but just google it and you'll find the right one. that upgrades the firmware but not the bb. so you'll be good.

Shsh allow you to be able to go back and forth between firmwares when apple stops signing them.
You can not upgrade to 4.1 unless you already have your shsh saved if you do let me know and we can go farther.

1) PwnageTool made custom 4.1 ipsw
2) iTunes 10 and up
3) Redsn0w 0.9.6b2
4) stock 4.1 ipsw

Steps:
1) Find a custom 4.1 ipsw made by PwnageTool 4.1.2. You can either search the web, or if you know someone with a Mac have them build and send the custom fw to you. If you have a friend with a Mac, just borrow it and follow the above steps for Mac PwnageTool method.
2) Once you get a hold of a custom 4.1 firmware, open Redsn0w 0.9.6b2
3) browse to stock 4.1 ipsw (not the custom one)
4) Follow Redsn0w's timer to set device into DFU mode
5) open iTunes
6) shift + restore to the custom 4.1 ipsw made by PwnageTool
7) after restore, it should give you access to your home screen (if you hacktivated).
8) if you didn't hacktivate, you'll be at the emergency call screen. Activate with your SIM in iTunes now to access springboard.
9) unlock with Ultrasn0w if needed.

I hav already downloaded stock 4.0.1 and 4.1 fw frm this sites dwnld section so now i'll search for a custom 4.1. Btw where does tu and shsh come in this? I read smwhre that we also need to start tss server through tu or tgis procedure is different?

Nope same thing tu you saves your shsh blobs and also runs as a server so you can kick out of dfu if needed

i wasnt a 100% about 4.1 update so i decided to restore to 4.0.1 to check the battery problem and if it was fixed, i might stick with update. ANYWAYS!!!!! I RESTORED (SHIFT RESTORE) AND FOLLWED ALL STEPS AS STATED IN MY FIRST POST TO RESTORE TO 4.0.1 and after restore, now my fone is stuck at connect to itunes to unlock sim. i dont have an offficial sim what to do>>>????


i thought that springboard would show up and i will jailbreak and then unlock through cydia but the springboard is locked!!! WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW!!!!!!!??????????

that means you've gotta activate/hacktivate it. since I'm not an unlocker (got mine factory unlocked when I got it) I'm not too familiar with hacktivating and all that. but the stuff I have read, going off very vague memory, I think redsnow might hacktivate? and there's something and SAM to save battery life? Try googling all this stuff, a good place to start would be 4.0.1 hacktivate. sorry I couldn't be of more help
