    Default iPhone 3GS - 3.1.3 , 5.12.01 upgrade to 4.xx

    Hello,

Im kinda a newb at this but im hoping I can get some help here

    I have a 3GS iPhone with 3.1.3 firmware and 5.12.01 baseband

I previously jailbroke with spirit long time ago. I now want to upgrade to 4.xx software. Ive had a couple misses, i used rednow to make a custom 4.1 software but after trying to upgrade though itunes it gave a 3194 error. After looking that up it seems I cant upgrade to 4.1 at all anymore due to apple signing there firmware now..

Im really lost here who can tell me how to get my jailbroken phone newer 4.0+ software and still be untethered jailbreak.

    Thanks!!

Front page, top center of cydia reads:

    SHSH: iOS 3.1.3, 4.0., 4.0.1, 4.1

Download the latest tiny umbrella, run it and close it, your hosts file is now set to Cydia. Use redsn0w 0.9.6b6 and browse to stock 4.1 firmware, check only the box DFU mode only . Once dfu is done, run itunes and Shift + restore to custom firmware 4.1 you have just built

Now, you should be able to restore to custom firmware of 4.1, just remember to use redsn0w to put you into dfu mode and then run itunes : shift + restore to CFW of 4.1 to preserve your baseband.

Redsn0w doesn't restore your iphone firmware, you have to use itunes. In order for redsn0w to work , you must browse to stock firmware and that doesn't mean it is going to do a restore, it will only jailbreak and add features to your already restored iphone.

If you don't have a Mac, only PC, then use snowbreeze 2.1 to create a custom firmware of 4.1. Once you have put your iphone into dfu mode thru redsn0w , you run itunes and shift + restore to Snowbreeze_4.1.ipsw. Remember to uncheck activate my iphone while building your custom firmware. You will need the original sim to activate it when restored to prevent further issues.

    Heres what i did;

    1. Tinyumbrella saved SHSH blobs
    2. redsn0w browsed to "iPhone2,1_4.1_8B117_Restore" click DFU mode only, followed directions and finished
    3. opened itunes shift+restored pointed to "iPhone2,1_4.1_8B117_Restore"
    4. Completed upgrade, pointed to iphone backup i did today, phone is currently restoing from back up

the phone its self says "Restore in progress" - "iPhone is activied"

    sound right??

After just reading your other post i did not do any snowbreeze app

    Update:

so it was all restored, no sort of cydia apps on there.. downloaded limera1n and it installed cydia.. kinda disappointed i lost like all my apps and all of my music on dtunes

I had my phone set up pretty cool with 5 column and 5 dock and a custom springboard.. you have to start from scratch everytime?

Yes, apple doesn't want you to jailbreak, so every restore or even update will wipe out all jailbroken stuffs.
