Default Am I safe to update my firmware?

I have a 3GS with firmware 3.1.3 that has been jailbroke. I would like to update to the new firmware but I want to make sure that it won't mess anything up and that it can be jailbroken once I update it.

A friend of mine did the original jailbreak for me, I am pretty much clueless but if you tell me what information you need and how to get it I'll be happy to provide it.

    1) do you need to unlock?
    2) do you have any SHSHs saved?
    3) which bootrom do you have (old or new)?

    1) I am on AT&T so I don't need to unlock.
    2) I just saved an SHSH before posting this reply.
    3) It has IBoot 359.3.2, so I believe that is the new bootrom.

On aside note, my phone went into recovery when I was finding out the bootrom.

You can kick it out of recovery with TinyUmbrella's exit recovery option.

First of all, you have the new bootrom so if you update to 4.2.1, the jailbreak will be tethered.

Second, if you don't want a tethered jailbreak, you will want to go to 4.1.

Thirdly, you can go to 4.1 if you have SHSHs. You said you just now saved your SHSHs, that would mean you only saved 4.2.1 and 4.2b3. You have not been able to save 4.1. To double check, follow the guide I linked you to on checking what actual SHSHs you have in either TinyUmbrella or Cydia's homepage.

I guess I have really screwed up. I managed to install 4.2.1. To make matters worse somehow I lost all of my contacts and for some reason they didn't come back to my phone when it synced and they don't seem to be in my itunes now either.

Well I was going to give you a step by step if you had just told me which SHSHs you have saved via TinyUmbrella, but now it's a different story.

You should go check your SHSHs and see what you have or you'll be stuck with a tethered jailbreak. If you don't want to go back down to 4.1, then just jailbreak it where it is tethered with Redsn0w.

You probably won't get your contacts back if you didn't save them with the info tab in iTunes.

Going to 4.1 would be just fine with me.
    The SHSH's are iPhone 3GS 3.1 (8B117) and iPhone3GS 4.2.1(8C148a)

Thanks for all the help, it is certainly appreciated.

You don't have any in between 3.1 and 4.2.1... You should have 4.1 if you have them for 3.1.

I'm just going to assume you have it then. Download a stock 4.1 ipsw. Then open TinyUmbrella and run the TSS Server. While that's running, open iTunes and hold shift and click "restore". Then select the stock 4.1 ipsw.

After iTunes finishes the restore, it you get error 1015, simply run TinyUmbrella's exit recovery option to kick it back up. Then you can continue to jailbreak with redsn0w, limera1n, or greenpois0n.
