I need help with and Iphone 4.

Im on 4.0.2 jailbroken
do i need to do anything before i upgrade?
i only want to jailbreak again after upgrade.

If you don't need to unlock, you can upgrade to 4.1 if you have SHSHs for it. If you don't have SHSHs, you'll have to go to 4.2.1, but that jailbreak will be tethered. So be ready to deal with running Redsn0w on it every time your phone shuts off or reboots if you go to 4.2.1.

4.1 is untethered, but like I said you should check your SHSHs to see if you can go that route.

If you need to unlock, going to 4.1 with a custom firmware created by PwnageTool is your only option but SHSHs are required. If no SHSHs, it's a real pain to preserve the baseband and go to 4.2.1 on an iP4. It will still be tethered even with custom firmware.

4.1 has the Gamecenter for online gaming, 4.2.1 has the added feature for airprint. 4.2.1 will be a tethered jailbreak whereas 4.1 is untethered jailbreak.

You would run tinyumbrella's TSS server then open iTunes to shift+restore. If you need to unlock, you'll need a custom fw. If not, use a stock 4.1 fw and then jb after the restore with redsn0w/greenpois0n/limera1n.

Well if he uses TinyUmbrella to update to 4.1 since he has the shsh blobs, TinyUmbrella will also preserve his baseband to 01.59 or what ever he's on. Then he just needs to jailbreak and use Ultrasn0w to unlock (i recommend version 1.1-1).

Yes, you can do it using TU method to preserve baseband of 4.0 when you actually at IOS 4.1 ( Only for iphone 4)
