Make sure you sync your contacts to outlook or address book or whichever you prefer. Also do a backup in itunes. If you have 4.1 SHSH you can use pwnage tool or sn0wbreeze to make a custom 4.1 firmware so that you can restore to that and still unlock with ultrasnow after.

To backup your apps just connect to iTunes and right click on your phone and transfer purchases then back up your iphone. Then everything is backed up in iTunes.

Regarding your Jailbreak. i would go to 4.1 until the untethered jailbreak is ready for 4.2.1 so providing you have you shsh saved with Cydia ?

    1. download the latest Tiny umberella and check that you have shsh on file, just click save my shsh in tiny and it will tell you what you have saved.

    2. Download a 4.1 firmwear for your iphone (download section on here) and save it to your desk top.

    3. Download the latest sn0wbreez (this will keep your baseband)

    4. Run sn0wbreez and point it to the firmwear you have downloaded and install cydia.

    5. run Tiny umberella and then do a shif+restore in itunes pointing it to the firmwear redsn0w has just made for you.

    6. load cydia and install Ultrasn0w (the unlock)

    7. Make sure you do loads of reading before hand, it is not hard but you need to make sure you are confident in what you are doing. so read a few guides first

How is it different from PwnageTool?

redsn0w doesn't require a system restore like PwnageTool does (it doesn't even use iTunes at all). On the other hand, PwnageTool can prevent your baseband from being upgraded when you upgrade your firmware, preserving your unlock. (redsn0w doesn't touch your baseband but it doesn't help preserve it during an upgrade either).

redsn0w works by modifying your current filesystem, so your existing baseband, data and applications should remain intact.

ADVICE: DO NOT USE REDSN0W AFTER DOING A STOCK APPLE UPGRADE TO 3.1.2 IF YOU NEED A CARRIER UNLOCK AND ARE CURRENTLY USING BASEBAND 04.26 OR EARLIER. The key part of that advice is “do not do a stock Apple upgrade to 3.1.2”. You really want to keep that 04.26 baseband on there because then you can keep using ultrasn0w. Ultrasn0w doesn't have the wifi issues that some people (10-20%) report when using geohot's blacksn0w unlock on 05.11. If you are at 04.26 or earlier, use a custom IPSW from PwnageTool to update your firmware to 3.1.2, or just stay at 3.0 and use redsn0w there (redsn0w and ultrasn0w work on both 3.0 and 3.1.2, but ultrasn0w needs baseband 04.26).

I miss read the above, thanks for putting me right.

    Sn0wbreez it is then

No it won't. But if you do a backup first then you can restore from that backup after.

How r u guys doin.... a very happy new year to u all...

i m still facing problem restoring my iphone 3GS

At first i tried to save my SSH blob with tinyUmbrella.. Cydia fail to save the blob sayin message like "you am too late".. I tried to save again using the "make my life easy" button in cydia.. unfortunately My cydia app in the phone is also not working and it was crashing at loading.. tried deleting files from iphone /private/var/lib/apt/lists folder .. still it crashes... so i went ahead with the restoring without saving the blob.
i tried with 4.1.2 first with Snowbreeze. while restoring with itunes it gave error 3194. change a line in Hosts file in window system directory.. it didnt work.. Tried with changing firewall setting and also in other laptops.. same error... then i tried restoring with another firmware 3.1.2 it gave the same error (3194).. on googling... i found many fix .. none of them work in my case.. then i found this one guy saying something like Apple stop signing old firmware for Iphone 3gs and a version of ipod.. so i can't restore to old firmware .. and that is why i'm getting that 3194 error.. m not very sure but since 3.1.2 and 4.1 are not working in my 3GS.. his explanation seems kinda true..
Now i m all confuse what to do...
which version of firmware to restore???
    will i get untethered jailbreak..??
people complain about wifi problem , gps problem after jailbreak..

Please tell me a stable version of Firmwire with 100% jailbreak without any problem .. and also its unlock..

You wont be able to restore to anything but 4.2.1 with the SHSH that you saved. From those errors though cydia's server may be down. Give it time and try again.

Its fine, since you have old bootrom you will be untethered too. Check your pm for a custom 4.2.1 that will preserve your baseband.
