This custom firmware will just get you to 4.2.1 and preserve your baseband. You will still need to run redsnow 0.9.6rc8 to install cydia and then install ultrasnow from cydia to unlock.

You need to point it to a regular 4.2.1 firmware. Not the custom one.

Error 21 is normal. You need to use redsnow first and choose the option to juse enter pwned dfu. Once there you can try the restore to the custom one again.

iPhone 3GS is stuck at "Connect to Itunes" screen
Hi Simon, I remember u as x98car..
Like to appreciate u once again for ur help in the past..
Rt now i'm facing a very weird problem.. My iPhone 3GS is stuck at "Connect to Itunes" screen. I tried doin the holding the Power and Home button method... but after apple logo, it goes back to "connect to itunes" screen. It doesnt come out of this loop and boot my iphone..
i restore last time with this FW : iPhone2,1_4.2.1_8C148a_Custom_Restore.ipsw . You gave this to me.
Before this condition, for few days my phone was behaving abnormally like getting off suddenly then restart and show charging (like when we have full battery down)... when it boots up it will show like 30% or 40% battery .. In normal case it boots up at around 7-8%
Is it possible to fix this problem without restoring???

I'm able to boot up my phone using a software "iphonerecoveryfix.exe" but the problem of "phone abnormally turning off suddenly (like crash) then showing charging when connected to PC" is still there.
Since my phone is atleast working, i backup my data and m willing to upgrade to new Firmware if that is goin to solve all my problem.
I like to know if any of the FW newer than 4.2.1 are stable and which version do u suggest for my phone. Once again my current details are:
Iphone 3GS
iOS 4.2.1(8C148a)
Modem Firmware : 4.26.08

Hello, how u doin... I'd like you to help me fix a problem in my phone which is really bugging me big time.. here's the problem
1. Phone gets turn off even before battery is exhausted. When power is plugged in, it sometimes shows battery charging icon and sometimes it powers on to normal screen.. I wonder whether it is software crash but all the opened application were still running in background when it powers up... This really confused me.. Some folks from online forum said it is due to battery fault which is caused by iOS v4.2.1 being incompatible to 3GS. Some people said they replaced their battery and everything works fine for them... Can u pls confirm this solution as I hv already purchased a battery but little worried ...
2. Battery percentage indication cannot be turn off. Even when the setting is set to off, the percentage is still shown next to battery icon.
3. Sometimes battery percentage doesn't update at all like it stay at one point for almost 15 minutes when in use .. And then the phone went off..
3. Sometimes, when cellular data and 3G is turn on, network went No Service for a while..

Have you tried a restore ? Try restoring first before replacing the battery.
