3g on 4.2.1 with ipad bb help

So I've been trying to update/jb/unlock a phone for a Christmas present for over a week now and I can't seem to get it right. I used pwnage tool to build a custom ipsw for 4.2.1 with the 6.15bb and it keeps getting stuck after option+restore through itunes(10.1). Logo it's stuck on looks like Steve Jobs with some Russian letters. If I use TU to kick it it just goes back to that screen. Anyone here able to guide me through how to do this correctly? Please help, I feel pretty incompetent now.
