Help needed going from 4.0.1 on iphone 3GS to 4.1 while preserving baseband
I'm trying to upgrade my phone to 4.1 I want to hold off on 4.2.1till something untethered shows up. I've been looking around how to upgrade to 4.1 while preserving my unlock. I'm confused by a lot that i've read. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I'm capable of doing what is needed i just need to know what will keep me from screwing up the unlock.
Here are the specs
4.0.1 on 3gs
5.13.04 Baseband
Jailbroken using jailbreakme
F0recast Says:
Model# MB717
Bootloader 6.4
Serial#86947GH
As for tethered it just says "Maybe?" I'm not sure if i have new bootrom or old bootrom.
I have SHSH files from 3.1.3 all the way to 4.2.1
Where do i go from here?
Thanks in advance!

Create a custom firmware of 4.1 from Snowbreeze 2.1 or Pwnage tools 4.1.2.
Run redsn0w 0.9.6b6 and browse to stock 4.1 fw.
Check only the box DFU mode.
Once DFU mode is achieved, Shift + restore to custom firmware of 4.1
Your BB will be preserved this way.
Once restored, you are already jailbroken at 4.1

I'm guessing i had to restore my phone to stock firmware before i did this? It screwed up when i restored with the custom firmware.

No, you should be able to directly restore to the custom 4.1.

Its hard to explain what happened, but the custom firmware was made. I had a white screen after it started the restore process and then it just stayed stuck in DFU. in redsnow it indentified that 4.1 was ispw on it. However it would get through 75% of the install and just stay stuck in DFU with no error reported. I managed to get it to come back but now i'm locked on 4.1 with 5.14.xx baseband.

I just followed the advice of the first guy who replied to my original post.
Made the custom firmware and then used redsnow to put it in dfu and installed the custom firmware and thats when **** went wrong. I think i was suppose to restore my phone to a clean 4.0.1 before i attempted a custom firmware restore.

So just try restoring to 4.0.1 now and see what happens.

If you are restoring to stock firmware and you are still getting error 29, it could be a hardware issue.

I was doing this all day (on a Mac)- What finally worked was starting fresh and going thru the WHOLE process with a clean 4.1 ipsw and pwnage tool 4.1.3. Tiny umbrella was running, i uninstalled my anti-virus software and I turned off my internet connection until activation (set up as new phone). i was previously jailbroken 4.01
