jailbreak options for iPhone 3G 3.1.3 bb 05.12.01

have iPhone 3G on version 3.1.3 and base band 05.12.01.
I want to unlock it.what are the best options.I googled and found that jailbreak for 5.12.01 is difficult.Is it better to upgrade to OS 4.2 and unlock?
please help me suggesting any links to jailbreak3G 3.1.3 baseband 5.12.01

Stay at 3.1.3 for 3g, use redsn0w 0.9.4 to jailbreak and browse to stock 3.1.2 fw when you are asked to.

Unlock with Ultrasn0w from Cydia.

You can still download apple apps without jailbreaking. The purpose of jailbreaking is to gain access to the root , unlocking and having themes and so forth.

I want to use another carrier soon.I will not be having AT&T there.I want to jailbreak and unlock.

Sorry for asking too many questions.the guide says there is no unlock at that moment.
