Default Almost done downgrading from iPhone 4.2 to 4.1 but stuck on error 3194

    Hey all,

So I've successfully erased the iOS on my iPhone 4, because I had 4.2.1. I also downgraded my iTunes from 10.x to 9.2.1, because the default restore option for that version is 4.1. Now, I'm trying to restore my iPhone - which is currently in limbo (can't turn it on, everything is "n/a") - to version 4.1 using iTunes. The thing is that it'll download the software update for 4.1, but it encounters error 3194 when trying to verify the update:

I've tried this 3 times now. I guess this happens because 4.1 is an unsigned update or something? I'm not sure. But basically, I have an iPhone 4 stuck in purgatory and totally devoid of any operating system and iTunes 9.2.1. How the heck can I get to version 4.1 from here? I'd be happy to clarify any details you need. Thanks so much.

Also, just as an FYI: I know that this is in fact possible, because my friend, who tried to walk me through this (unsuccessfully), did it himself about 7 hours ago. He erased the iOS, downgraded to 4.1, and jailbroke his phone using greenpois0n.

do you have 4.1 shsh's saved on saurik's server, if not then you will not be able to restore to anything but 4.2.1, if you do (you can use tinyumbrella to verify if you aren't sure), download tinyumbrella and connect your phone, start the TSS server and make sure it is accepting connections (log tab will tell you) and then do the restore again and it will succeed, if you get an error towards the end of the restore use tinyumbrella to kick the phone out of recovery and you should be good to go

j3st3er, does the error mean the same thing for an Apple TV? The reason I ask is because that is the error I get when trying to jailbreak my ATV2.

Yes that error means the same thing. You are probably trying to use a custom firmware to jailbreak your Apple TV but dont have the SHSH for it.

Yea, the guide that I found instructed you to make a custom ipsw via Snowbreeze (my mac hasn't arrived from Apple yet)and everything works well until I get error 3194. I fully plan on jailbreaking it using pwnagetool when I get my Mac; at this point I just want to win the battle. =] Thanks for the info!

No prob, you will probably get the same error using pwnage tool though. You may need to wait until the jailbreak tools are updated for the new firmware.

Unfortunately I don't have 4.1 shshs saved, so it looks like I just wasted my whole morning and need to go back to 4.2.1 and wait for a fix for that. Is the rumor still that it'll be out before Christmas?

Ok, new problem. I can't even restore it to 4.2. iTunes 10 is unable to restore it; when it gets to the verification stage, I get error 1013:

My iPhone is caught in a loop where no matter what action I take, it ultimately goes back to the iTunes + USB image. Even if I put the damn thing into DFU mode and then try to restore it again via iTunes, the restore will still fail and I'll go right back to the USB image.

I think I managed to brick my iPhone.

If you dont care about unlock here is how you can restore properly to 4.2.1. Open tiny umbrella, click advanced and deselect box that says "set hosts to cydia on exit". Then close tiny umbrella and try the restore again.
