    Pardon the nitpicking...

It all depends on the method of untethering.

If it's an exploit in the kernel (e.g., the current 4.1 untether, or Spirit, jailbreakme, etc.) verbose booting will not be possible without breaking the untethering (at which point it becomes rather meaningless). Comex is believed to be working on another userland exploit for untethering.

If it's an iBoot exploit (Geohot has one, unreleased) or a bootrom-level exploit (p0sixninja's working on one) then verbose booting will be possible on an untethered jailbroken device.

All depends on which exploit comes out first.

Hey orb, are you saying that geohot has another exploit? And the one p0sixninja is working on, is that one besides shatter?

Well if one does come out without verbose booting support can I at least use a custom boot logo

That request might be a bit harder to pull off and is likely to be much further out on the current batch of devices.

Verbose booting is handled by iBoot--if the untethering exploit occurs in iBoot or before, then verbose booting is possible with an untethered system.

Bootup logos, however, are loaded in very early, either by the bootrom or LLB via the device tree. They are SHSH blob checked, and require a bootrom exploit in the chain of trust to function (e.g., neither limera1n nor SHAtter will work for boot logos by themselves on an untethered system).

Is the stock Apple bootlogo an image or is it like their newer keyboard implementation? Is it packed in with a firmware?

    It's both actually.

There's "applelogo-640x960.s5l8930x.img3" (or whatever size) which is run by LLB or the bootrom (I'm almost positive it's LLB) and then there's a separate logo in the kernelcache (evidenced by the colored distortion on a JBME'd iPhone--that's the buffer overwrite in action).
