Default Erase All Contents and Settings

    Hey all

I was running 3.1.2 on my iPhone 3G (Rogers- No JB/Unlock) and was advised to update my software

after delaying it, I finally had my phone crash on me and act really weird

So i went into Settings s- General - Reset- and clicked on Erase all Contents and settings and confirmed

it went through a 2 hour process, in which I waited and waited...

after its completion it rebooted and now just shows an Apple logo with a spinning gear

I have tried numerous times to put it in DFU mode manually and also using Recboot ( I know I am doing it right, because I can put my iPhone 4 in DFU mod easily) however when I try putting my 3G in DFU mode, holdinb the buttons does not do anything

the phone stays on APPLE logo spinning gear (sometimes the gear freezes) and about every 20 minutes it restarts flashes off and back on then the apple logo appears and a few minutes later the spinning gear comes up

I have even spent 20+ minutes waiting in position for the screen to turn off, so I can press the power button and home button at the same time to start up DFU mode, but all attempts have failed

    am I stuck??

You can go into dfu or recovery mode even when the apple logo is up. Then you can restore it.

I understand that, I can do that n my iPhone 4

however this iPhone 3, even if i hold the power/home button for 10-20 seconds it will not reboot,

and when it randomly reboots every 20 minutes, I can hold bot hthe home and power button right from the power off state and nothing happens

making note I have also not opened this device, and checked the pins to see if anything is damaged and nothing is

device manager does not detect the device, I consider this is because I clicked on Erase All Contents and Settings from within the iPhone and this completly erases the iOS.

Is the phone plugged in when you are trying this?

lol Yes, I understand your probing techniques that is a very valid question... (I am an ex Genius, and now an iPhone Dev (non Apple)

the same cable that is plugged into my 3G is unplugged from that phone and plugged into my iPhone 4, in which iTunes dispays the iPhone 4.

also noting I have tired RecBoot, and iRecovery, both with failed attempts and no response at all from the iPhone 3G

I think the mainboard might be pooched, but I really dont want to give up hope on a free iphone 3G for dev purposes

lol, sorry. Didn't mean to ask the simple questions, but with some people they are needed

Weird that nothing is working to at least put it in recovery.

I TOTALLY understand your issue, I had a 3Gs with 4.0 Firmware and I did the same thing (used the Erase All Content And Settings Option) and was having the exact same issue. Got tired of the issue, if putting it in DFU doesn't work, turn it off, open iTunes on your PC (making sure the device isn't connected to the PC, yet), after turning it off hold down the Home Button & connect the USB cable to the device and it will turn on until it displays the iTunes logo on the device. You're putting the device in Recovery Mode, restore it to the latest firmware and you're done. Since my iPhone was stuck in this loop even though I had the SHSH blobs saved on Cydia I had to upgrade to the latest firmware so the device could bring the iPhone back to life.

Shot in the dark, but I had some problems getting a 3GS to start up, froze at the apple when booting. I tried numerous things and once in awhile, if I cycled the mute switch on and off about 3 times and then tried booting, it would boot up. Other times I had to just peat and repeat until it worked.

    FTW GOT IT WORKING!!!!

So here is the final resolution, obviously it was not responding to the force shutdown using both buttons and holding them for 10 seconds, however every 15-20 min the device would restart randomly

durring that time I made sure I had iTunes opened, and it plugged into my machine (even though before it never showed up in device manager)

as soon as the screen went black, I forced and held down the home button, in which to my discovery pushed it to Recovery Mode (Not DFU)

form that I could restore to 4.2.1

I am curious as to why this happened, obviously I shall never know, however since I was going to cut my losses with this phone (dev device) I am in game

thanks forum, you people really know your stuff, and you inspired me to keep on trying over and over until we came to a resolution.

in the end, I guess if your phone is stuck from going to Settings - General - Erase all content and settings and it erases and it get stuck in a loop, wait till the loop resets and jumps t oa blank (black) screen for 2 seconds, instantly press and hold down the HOME button, and make sure your device is plugged into your machine and iTunes is open.

after getting this up and running I forgot how slow 3G is compared to my iPhone4, however right now my iPhone4 is a bit jealous as the 3G is getting more quality time with it

    FTW!

    thanks guys
