    Default iOS4 on iPhone 2G

I'm trying to install iOS4 on my nephew's iPhone that I have him so that he can use "Talkatone", but it's only on 3.1.3 and 4.0+ is required. He's also on T-Mobile, so it needs to be unlocked.
I've found this tutorial online (How to Jailbreak iPhone 2G with iOS 4.1 with Redsn0w 0.9.6 Beta 1 | 99c Blog), but it doesn't help with the unlock aspect. It's kind of dated (Sept. 2010) so does anybody know if you can install 4.0 on an iPhone 2G unlocked?
    Thanks

Unfortunately, any and all versions of iOS 4 are totally incompatible with the iPhone 2G by Apple's design. The latest version of iOS for the 2G is 3.1.3, and unless Apple has an unbelievable change of heart, it'll probably stay that way.

    Sorry.

Iphone 2G is considered obsolete by apple and will not provide anymore support.

You cannot get iOS 4+ on the iPhone 2g, but you can mod the Info.plist of the app so it can be used on 3.x, but it might not be stable

To do this, install the app on a iDevice that it is compatible on and SSH to /var/mobile/Applications/xxx(the app)/AppName.app
    open up Info.plist and change
    <key>MinimumOSVersion</key>
    <string>4.0</string>
    <key>MinimumOSVersion</key>
    <string>3.1</string>

Most apps that require iOS 4.0+ generally do so for a reason--their function requires several calls to 4.0-only APIs or something.

PS: Changing a file inside the app bundle like info.plist will probably break the code signature on that application, and your iPhone will likely not want to run it (as I think the break would irritate fairplayd not the kernel). We cannot help you defeat FairPlay code signature enforcement here, even if only for benevolent reasons.

Kind of a bummer that Apple abandons the old hardware... I guess it's a good business tactic to entice people to buy the new ish...

    If I were Jobs, you'd have 4.0+

Unfortunately I don't think that device can handle iOS 4 anyway. It's not so good already on an iPhone 3G. It has improved from 4.1 and up, but even with those improvements I've heard that it still isn't as good as 3.1.3 in the performance aspect. The hardware is just dated, especially for the 2G. I think if any further advancements are made with the new iOS, it would just be more and more difficult for the older devices to handle, so inevitably it would become obsolete at some point in time.

Thanks for all of the responses, most of the stuff said is what I already knew about Apple not providing iOS4 on the 2G, officially. But since redsn0w allowed iOS4 on the 2G, jailbroken (in the link above), I figured I'd see what you all would think if it would be possible with it being unlocked as well.

The linked article says "iPhone 2G" but the process listed and firmware download linked are for the second-generation iPod touch. Pretty sure that as awesome as redsn0w is, it can't jailbreak a non-existent firmware version.

I can tell you this much-- if you can find or make a working build of true iOS 4.x for the iPhone 2G, and it'll be unlockable (due to the iPhone 2G's hardware-based unlock exploits).
