iphone 4 pwnagetool 4.1.2, not eligible for the requested build
I tried restoring the iPhone 4 with the custom built firmware from pwnagetool and iTunes said that it couldn't restore and that it was "not eligible for the requested build".
Any ideas? I used this firmware: iPhone3,1_4.1_8B117_Restore.ipsw, downloaded from a direct apple link. Is that not the correct firmware for an iPhone 4?
The Model is MC603C
I followed this tutorial although it's generally identical to any other pwnagetool tutorial for iPhone 4 out there

you used a 4.1 ipsw not a 4.2.1, that is why you are getting the "ineligible for build" error

I intended to use 4.1
Are you saying that the iphone update server is not signing for 4.1 restores anymore now that 4.2.1 is released?
How do I get around this? How can I jailbreak for 4.1? I saw this: Caching Apple's Signature Server - Jay Freeman (saurik) Do I do that?
EDIT: FYI, I tried the hosts file method from the link above, and I still get the error in itunes. Any help?Last edited by atomicrabbit; 12-12-2010 at 08:08 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

The recent release of tiny umbrella helps you to download all available shsh blobs saved in Cydia. This is the quickest way of finding out if you have any shsh blob but your iphone has to be able to boot up (bootable). Just one click of save shsh after plugging in is all you do.

and then what? Once I've saved my SHSH blobs, what do I do?

you are aware that you must have some temporary dislexia. My title says "iphone 4 pwnagetool 4.1.2, not eligible for the requested build" ;P ... referring to the version of pwnagetool I am using.
And thanks for the post. I just figured it out after I posted my post above.

your title implies that you are trying to use a 4.2.1 ipsw created with pwnagetool and it giving you a "not eligible for this build" error, so no there is no dyslexia (correct spelling by the way)

I apologize for any misunderstandings. My intention is to jailbreak an iphone 4, already running stock 4.1. After running the 4.1 ipsw thru pwnagetool v4.1.2, I put the iphone into DFU mode and tried to restore the custom firmware to it. I then received the "... not eligible for the requested build" error.
Also, to continue the conversation, I followed your instructions:
1) Installed latest version of Tiny Umbrella (OSX), downloaded from here: The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
2) Backed up SHSH blobs from the iphone
3) Started TSS Server
4) Put the iPhone into DFU mode
5) option+clicked Restore button in iTunes, loaded the custom firmware
6) After a few minutes of "reparing to restore iphone", I received unknown error 1604, which according to iTunes Errors - The iPhone Wiki , it means "Device was not pwned (signature checks were not blocked). Custom firmware can't be restored."
My iPhone still has the stock 4.1 firmware, no change.
btw, after I started the TSS Server and before I restored, I pinged gs.apple.com and it returned 127.0.0.1

I didn't read the tutorial you linked to to see if it's the same as this one but try it and see if it works for you iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 4 Using PwnageTool (Mac) [4.1]
also the newest redsn0w will let you put your phone in the special Dfu mode and allow custom firmware restores, you can try that as well if the guide I linked for you doesn't work
P.S.
which shsh's was tinyumbrella able to save for you?Last edited by j3st3r; 12-12-2010 at 10:45 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

pretty much identical, except for being a bit more detailed and using pwnagetool 4.1 instead of 4.1.2 which is what I used.
EDIT: Also, the one thing I noticed, whenever I tried to enter into DFU mode, I used the DFU button in pwnagetool, but as soon as it started the countdown, iTunes would launch. I could get the iPhone into DFU no problem, but I didn't get any msg from pwnagetool saying it was successfully put into DFU mode. All I got was a msg from iTunes saying that it detected a device in DFU mode. NOTE: I waited until I saw the USB cord with iTunes logo showing on the screen before releasing the home button.
EDIT 2: In Tiny Umbrella, in the "All Saved SHSHs" box, there's only one item that says "iPhone 4 4.2.1 (8C148)", yet, my iphone is running 4.1. Why would it not backup the 4.1 SHSH?Last edited by atomicrabbit; 12-12-2010 at 10:54 PM.

it can only save shsh's for firmwares that apple is currently signing which at this point is 4.2.1, you can use redsn0w, limera1n or greenpois0n to jailbreak your phone as is, there is no need to use a custom firmware

um, ok. I thought the whole point of getting the SHSH was to get around that. Whats the point of having this software if you can't save your SHSH blobs after a new firmware is released and if you're running the stock 4.1 firmware?
btw, I looked at the tiny umbrella log, and I see this:
12/13/2010 01:03:27.210 iPhone-iPhone4 4.1 (8B117) is already in progress!
then a few lines down...
"CYDIA DOES NOT HAVE YOUR SHSH FOR iPhone4 4.1 (8B117) THERE IS NO WAY FOR YOU TO GET THEM. SORRY. YOU ARE JUST TOO LATE." ... same for 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.2b3
EDIT: So what you're saying is that I will never be able to restore to the stock 4.1 firmware if I jailbreak?
Any suggestions on which tool I should use, if I decide to jailbreak? redsn0w, limera1n or greenpois0n?Last edited by atomicrabbit; 12-12-2010 at 11:18 PM.

at this point regardless of whether you are jailbroken or not you will not be able to restore to stock 4.1 without shsh's

and thats why I'm reluctant to jailbreak. I guess if anything happens, I can restore to stock 4.2.1.
so which tool of the 3 you mentioned, would you suggest to use to jailbreak?

I have used all 3, I personally prefer redsn0w but they all use the same exploit (limera1n's exploit), when limera1n was first released it gave me some problems so I switched to greenpois0n, but I believe the bugs have been worked out of limera1n since then, also redsn0w has the newest Cydia bundled in already so I've been using it since it was updated to work with 4.1 (I've been beta testing an app for someone and have restored about 50 times in the past 2 weeks and redsn0w has worked flawlessly every time)

um, downloaded redsn0w 0.9.6b4 for mac, got this error:
"you can't open the application 'redsn0w' because it is not supported on this architecture"
running osx 10.5.8 .. ? huh ?
um, same for limera1n ... wtf??
EDIT: Downloaded redsn0w on my pc and jailbroke the iPhone easily. Pretty sad that they didnt make limera1n or redsn0w compatible with osx 10.5.8. I don't see the point, but whatever.
All you help and replies are greatly appreciated!!Last edited by atomicrabbit; 12-13-2010 at 12:08 AM.

glad you got it worked out

Y'all aren't on a PPC (a.k.a., PowerPC) Mac are you? If so, that would suggest the latest redsn0w releases are Intel-only binaries.
Further, if you're on a PPC Mac, I don't know if any tools are written for that architecture--may have to snag a buddy's Windows computer or something.
