iPhone 3GS stuck in restore loop after 4.2.1 (06.15.00 baseband) update
Hello all,*
I have an iPhone 3GS that I got with 4.2.1 firmware on it. Trying desperately to find a way to unlock it for overseas use, I used the Redsnow activation method to get it unlocked, but the firmware crashed while it was loading and doesn't seem to be doing anything. I did choose to install the 06.15 baseband as part of this process.*
I'm now trying to restore back to stock and start again, but I cannot restore to stock firmwares because of the 06.15 baseband. I also can't get Ultrasnow or PwnageTool working properly to create custom IPSW's to restore to. I still have access as when I turn on the phone it says its in restore mode...I just need something to restore to.*
Does anyone have any tips? Maybe a custom IPSW they can send me to help me out? I'd greatly appreciate it!

You can use redsn0w to try and tether boot your device. If you have 4.1 shsh blobs, you can restore to stock 4.1 fw or you can restore to custom fw of 4.2.1 ( I am going to include it in your PM box)
Make sure you use redsn0w to put you into DFU mode before restore to cfw of 4.2.1.

I don't have the SHSH blobs, either. Am I SOL until some newer exploit news arrives?

Try this (Mac)
Download irecovery & place in folder on desktop go to Terminal & type cd desktop then type cd (foldername) Plug you iPhone in
then type:
"./irecovery -s" without the "
You will see some scrolling text.....
then copy this and paste to terminal:
setenv auto-boot true
saveenv
/exit
Reboot - hope this helps

I tried using iRecovery with no luck. It's still booting in recovery mode. I'm not even sure there's a complete firmware loaded on the device right now. Is there any way to recover the SHSH blobs after the fact?
I'm not entirely new to this stuff. I have an iPhone 4, used to have an iPhone 2G and have been doing this for a while now for pretty much every firmware. I just hit a snag, and I'm confident that the jailbreak/unlock community can help me find my way around it.
I can't restore to stock firmware through iTunes, and am having trouble getting custom IPSW's installed (made my own) through Redsnow. They both hang during the recovery process (at the Apple screen with the progress bar.)

Progress!
I managed to restore to a Custom FW. Now I am on 4.2.1 with the 06.15 baseband (iPad).
Where should I go from here? I don't want to mess this up again.
I'm looking to get jailbroken and unlocked.

Did the CFW not have Cydia on it ????
if it did just install ultras0w. if not you will have to jailbreak again with redsn0w and then install ultrasn0w.
Or get a CFW with cydia on it (i would send you one but i dont have one) but if you ask iyeow or somebody else i am sure they will have one they dont mind sharing

Well, it's no longer in a restore loop. It's now at a screen that says "No SIM card installed" and is waiting for activation.
So, my next stage is to restore again with a CFW with Jailbreak and Cydia on it?
And to make sure I understand...with a tethered jailbreak, I can only do the jailbreak stuff while tethered to the system I jailbroke on? Will I be able to unlock it and use it as a mobile, without being connected?

You need to install cydia with redsnow 0.9.6b6. Then you can install ultrasnow to unlock. A tethered jailbreak means every time you reboot you will have to use redsnow to "boot tethered". It does not mean it has to stay connected all the time.

Now you need to run redsnow again and just choose the boot tethered option.

Okay, so really all I need to do is boot it tethered, then make sure it has enough charge? And I can use it like a regular phone then?
Is the hang during the regular Apple boot sequence...is that due to the fact it's somehow identified its been unlocked and on a different baseband?Last edited by infrno19; 12-20-2010 at 09:52 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Yup, just boot tethered then you are good to use it like normal, until your next reboot of course. It hangs at the apple logo because when you install the unlock it install mobile substrate, which hooks into springboard. So the boot sequence cant proceed because no jailbreak related stuff will work unless you boot tethered.

Let me hop on this boat too.
Hello everyone. I am having a somewhat similar problem to the original posting. I have a 32gb 3GS that I was trying to update from 4.0.1 to 4.2 and got stuck in a restore loop (actually happened to my ipod touch 2G as well, but that can definitely wait). I saved my SHSH blobs and all that good stuff then tried to update the software, got caught up in the restore loop so I downloaded Tiny Umbrella to try to get it to help out with the restore but now I get an error message 1604 and can't get this sucker out of the restore loop!
This isn't the first time I've done a JB on my phone, but I'm most definitely still a newb when it comes to this stuff. Since updates in the past have been so simple I really didn't think I would have much of a problem here, guess I was dead wrong. Oh, and I'm running the newest iTunes (updated it right before this).
Please help me out, being phone-less SUCKS.
