my question is how do i update my firmware to 4.0 from itunes but i dont want to update it to 4.2.1?

If you want to go to 4.0 you need 4.0 SHSH

You'll have to have obtained them previously--there is no way to get them for 4.1 or earlier anymore.

SHSHs (or Signature/Secure HaSHes) are files from Apple that specifically permit your device to restore to a specific version of software (4.0, 4.1, etc.) You can save them at any time using TinyUmbrella (The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella), but you can only save the current (and any future) SHSH files for the newest OS--in this case, 4.2.1.

Case in point, since you're just starting out in the jailbreak world, odds are very likely you don't have the necessary files, therefore, you cannot restore to anything other than the current version.

However, all other versions of iOS can be jailbroken as-is right this moment. What version and model of device are you wanting to jailbreak?
