Default Arrggghhh! Jailbroken/Unlocked iPhone 3G Stuck in Recovery Mode!!!

Hey guys, new to posting (not the forum ) and I've run into a problem, which seems to be a problem that is common right now.

I've been jailbreaking & unlocking iPhones/iPods for about 2 years now but I am completely stuck right now.

Ok, so I jailbroke & unlocked a friends iPhone 3G running on iOS 4.1 & baseband 5.14 last week. Wifi doesn't work (gray letters, has always been like that) but I opened Cydia and it loaded some stuff then I used DiskAid to add Cydia folder & ultrasn0w, unlock worked well with T-Mobile.

2 days ago he gives me the iPhone w/ the "Connect to iTunes" screen (he doesn't know how it got in that state but this isn't the first time he has somehow done it or one of his friends have used it and somehow managed to get it into that screen) which ain't bother me since I just restored it through iTunes and jailbroke/unlocked it all over again.

This is not the case now because it has the iPad baseband therefore I can not restore it through iTunes as it gives me an error. I have tried restarting it, using TinyUmbrella to "kick" it out of recovery mode, and using redsn0w to both start it in "tethered boot" and have also tried re-jailbreaking & unlocking it. It finishes the whole process but always ends up in recovery mode.

Was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or solutions for this problem

The only hope I have right now is to wait for the upcoming redsn0w which is said to allow you to put other baseband firmwares on an iPhone, which would mean I can use that and change the baseband back to 5.14 & attempt to restore it through iTunes.

You should be able to kick it out of recovery with tiny umbrella when restoring to 4.1. That wont work on 4.2.1 though. For 4.2.1 you will need a custom firmware with no baseband in it to restore to in order to avoid any errors. You dont have to use the boot tethered option on a 3G either, that is just for newer bootrom devices on 4.2.1

Thanks for the reply. The 3G is on 4.2 firmware. I have no kind of ssh blobs as it is not my iPhone therefore Tiny Umbrella can't really do much aside from using it to kick it out of recovery which has not worked. Will report back after I look around to see if anyone has a custom firmware w/ no baseband and see what I can do with it.

On a side note, one quick question about Tiny Umbrella, as I've never actually had to use it before, if you save your ssh blobs and decide to restore it through Tiny Umbrella does that change just your firmware, or both the firmware & baseband?

Tiny umbrella cannot preserve baseband. On a 3G you don't need shsh for 3.1.3 so you can always restore to that. You will still get a 1015 error but tiny umbrella will work to kick out of recovery on 3.1.3.

Thanks alot for pointing me in the right direction! Problem solved.

Was able to find 4.2 for the 3G w/ no baseband & Cydia. Did the restore through iTunes. Booted right up normally. Then just used DiskAid to create the Cydia/AutoInstall directory and put in the mobilesubstrate & ultrasn0w ".deb" files. Restarted it twice and everything is good to go again.
