I just can't remember the name... anyone here know?

Let us know your device, firmware and baseband, we can tell you what jailbreak to use.

From you profile info, you have the oldbootrom. If you want unlock, go for 4.1. This is how you do it.
Download tiny umbrella , plug iphone in, click save shsh.
Update itunes to 9.2 to the latest is fine.
Download Snowbreeze 2.1 and download the OFW of 4.1 ipsw
Use Experr mode and uncheck the activate my iphone.
Build it and it will be named Snowbreeze_4.1.ipsw placed on your desktop.
Download redsn0w 0.9.6b6 and browse to OFW of 4.1.
Check only the Box : DfU mode only.
    Once DFU is achieved.
Open up itunes : shift + restore to this Snowbreeze_4.1.ipsw
Once restored you are already jailbroken at IOS 4.1
    Unlock with Ultrasn0w from Cydia.

The above method assumes you have 4.1 shsh blob.

    Well it's a 3GS, 4.2.1

I can't tell you the baseband because the phone is not in my possession. I sent it to a friend overseas, JB and unlocked and ready to go. First thing he does is connect it to itunes, which then tells him there is an update available. He does it and this is where we're at.

I suggested maybe tiny umbrella can downgrade him but I don't know if there is a shsh saved for that phone or not, and if his baseband upgrade is irreversible.

And regarding my profile, this is a different phone than what I have in my profile. That phone gave me all sorts of problems when I upgraded to 4.1... battery drained in a matter of 3-4 hours while in standby, phone not receiving calls. I used tiny umbrella to downgrade back down to 3.1.2 and life is good again.

Now for my friend, I hope he isn't screwed.
